Since we live in military housing, I can only do container gardening. I did a lot last year, but wanted to do way more this season. I have a grans master plan! Pots are so expensive though! Do you think I can buy the big Rubbermaid containers, drill holes in the bottom, and use the lids as saucers?

I don't see why that wouldn't work. The drilling might be a tad difficult since they aren't usually that thick.

But only--how did you take it?

You might want to check yard sales & Thrift shops for old containers,,,
What a great idea especially because you can move the "container gardens" around to get more or less direct sunlight. I can just imagain a cute Herb garden in one of those tubs!

They are on sale for $5.99 at Target this week, so I just may pick them up. They have sorts of bright colors too, which might be kind of fun!

My grandfather used the styryfoam ice chests to gardenin, they lasted for years and people would just give them to im. They were easy to move around the yar. Not pretty but very functional

The big containers DO get brittle after a couple of years of being out all winter, but I have grown strawberries that way =)

Carol - I love the idea of the styrofoam chests. I have many neighbors who are spring cleaning their garages and are throwing the chest away. I would much rather use them for gardening than have them taking up space in a landfill!

I like using rubbermaid containers for lots of things and am currently growing herbs in a few indoors. I have used them outside as well, but after a while they do tend to come apart. I've never used the styrofoam containers before, but will certainly keep that in mind. I would imagine that you could also paint them or something to "fancy" them up a little bit. Right now I'm also using some old litterboxes to start seeds in.

I use five gallon buckets. I get them at Rural King. Sometimes they have them on sale for just a couple of bucks and I may pick up 10 or so. They aren't the prettiest things, but you can paint the outside. And be sure to drill some holes in the bottom and I use old screen over the holes to keep the dirt in.

Last year I went to the garden center and asked if they ever had the containers that the trees grow in for sale. They actually gave me quite a few and I used them for my potatoes. They already have holes and are very sturdy.

I love container gardening. When we are going to be away from our home for a few days I can move my containers where the sprinkler will get to them.
