The Harley is paid in full!!!! I told my hubby we needed to do that when we got our Tax refund this year. SO I sent the check off the other day and we should get the title in a few weeks. That is such a relief to have that payment gone. Last year we paid off the Trooper. So we have NO vehicle payments right now. We have been talking about getting a newer car with better gas mileage. Living way out here and having this Trooper is not good. It gets around 18 MPG but we could do way better. But then we'd have a car payment. Don't really wnat that. So I try not to go to town too much. ANd when I do I try to get everything done that needs to be done that day. We also have an old Ford F150. GAS HOG! It gets about 6 MPG. Can't go by a gas station in that without pulling in. But it does come in handy at hay time.

Anyway, was wondering, if I am not being too nosy, what y'all do with your tax refunds. Do you save it or splurge on something you've wanted or needed. Or do you pay off big items like cars. Or go on vacation?

Our refund goes into savings to build a downpayment for a farm. But it always seems that (at least the last three years) there has been a vehicle that has needed to be replaced or had major work done to it. Congrats on paying the vehicles off! Isn't that a great feeling?

Our refund for the past couple years has been going to paying off Doug's Student loans. Next year it will start going towards paying off my loans and misc. debt that we haven't paid off yet. Either that or we are going to buy a commuter car because our vehicles are in the same position that yours are in Kris- paid for but gas hogs. :( I would love to get one of those cars that gets between 32-45 miles per gallon. That would double our gas mileage and save us about $200 a month. Eventually we are going to need to get a truck with some towing capacity (horse trailer) etc.

We headed right over to Costco and stocked our shelves with much-needed supplies. Hopefully a good bit of it will last 3 or 4 months, if not longer! :) There's a little money left over, but that's going toward homeschool expenses for next fall. It never ends, does it? I would LOVE to be able to go on vacation with my family! Right now I'm not even sure we'll be able to afford our annual summer get-together with my family due to the cost of gasoline, though. My sister has to fly in from Denver with her kids, which is going to be difficult, too. She had to pass on the trip last year due to the cost. She figured that way she'd be able to save up enough to come out this year, and now she doesn't even think she'll make it out this summer! SO sad. I really love our family "reunions" at my Mom's - we ALL look forward to it. All the kids are going to be so disappointed! Oh, well... 'guess ya just gotta do what ya gotta do! :) - Nini

Nini. my sis and brother live in Col. Springs. She can't afford to come here and I can't afford to go there. Her DD is graduating from Ga/ Southern in May so I hope to be able to see her then. ANd my brother is coming here form an Atlanta business trip in 2 weeks so we will finally be able to see him. It's been 6 1/2 years since I have seen him. I hope y'all get to see each other this summer, Nini. It's a shame families have to live so far apart.

Alee, we have been talking about a Hyundai, well, I can't even spell it so maybe not, or a Kia. I want an SUV because I am just used to them. But the newer ones get at least 40 MPG. But VW has a plant here now and I would love to have a VW but there is NO way we could afford a new one of those. Even though they are made here. I want an old VW beetle or a bus so bad. That would be perfect for a trip to town.

Amy, I hope you get your farm soon. I love your blog. You are writing a book I see. What will it be about? I can't wait to read it.

Our property taxes have almost doubled in the last two years. We have always been able to save and pay it all in April instead of the double payment. My thinking has been...what if in October, something comes up and we need the money for something else. So..our refund will go to pay quite a bit of our property tax. We MUST not get behind in our taxes. I'm in my 60's so I have been through the student loans etc. We are lucky that our family is small and close by. My husband commutes 45 miles a day, and luckily we have a 1992 Honda Accord that still after all these years gets 32 mpg. We also have an SUV that we use for hauling groceries, extra people & car camping. It gets 19 mpg. Both of the vehicles are paid for and we can't afford new ones. Two years ago our garage collaped with all our snow (5-6 ft) that could not be shoveled off, so last year we had to put up a new garage. That took most of our savings. It is tough for us all in different ways, I think. I appreciate the farmgirls who even have good thrifty suggestions. It all helps.

The past couple of years we've used ours to pay down on bills. We do splurge a little and get something we've really wanted (such as livestock or books, etc) but put a limit on how much we spend on that, the rest goes to bills. One day they will all be paid in full and we can splurge big time :D

Claudia, our property taxes are included in out house payments. ANd they go up every year which makes our house payment go up along with the homeowner's ins. It does always seem like when I have some money saved, something happens and there it goes. One year the transmission blew. So I had to use the money I had saved to remodel and get a new transmission.

Rachel, we have done that too. Get those few extra bills paid. We do have some now that I could pay off just to get them out of the way. I hate those little bills. It would be nice to just go do something fun instead though. maybe one day.

This year we owe the State and get back from the Feds. We will use it to pay back the State tax and then my husband said we could split the rest. So my part will go toward horse expenses. One can never have too much hay.

The past couple of years we would use our refund towards a Vacation. Nothing too fancy. Sometimes just camping. But this year, we will be using it on house repairs. We need to redo the kitchen or the bathroom. I need to get a chain-link fence for our backyard. (the neighbors dog bite me last year)
We never count on that return. It is kind of like found money. Now mind you, we only ever get back one or two thousand dollars from the feds. Now-a-days thats not much at all. But, my husband was thinking that maybe we should just put it towards the morgage. I think we only have 7 more years to pay it off.
But, what ever you all do with it, make sure you at least do one small thing for yourself. Even if it is dinner out one night at a local diner. Or a new pair of garden gloves. We all worked hard for our money. We all need just a little something special once in a while.

Typically we pay our property taxes with our income tax refund. Then, if there is something left over it goes for whatever we need or want at that time . . . maybe it's dinner or something fun!
