i am so sorry kristina, it is always so sad to have a animal die, even chickens. could she have had an egg stuck in her. sometimes they do just die. sending hugs sherrye

I have had some die too, it is so sad. I am sorry for your loss. It could have been so many things. You will probably never know. Again I am sorry.

| Yes it happens. Out of my original batch of Orpingtons and Delewares for some reason year 3 has been the magic number for the Delewares. I have lost 4 of them this year. No apparent reason. Orpingtons still going strong. |

We had one of our hens die suddenly a month ago in the coop. I was told by another farm girl "it just happens". Sometimes its easier to know why they died though, like watching the hawks carry them off. This was just so sudden! Sorry for your loss. :(

We loas tone too last week. Just a sudden thing w/o warning. I think this particular hen was maybe 3 or 4. Still kind of "young" but not in egg layng prime.

It is always discouraging when something strange like that happens. It's possible that she may not have been eating or drinking for a couple of days due to an unknown illness. She could have been "egg bound" as Sherrye suggested.
Look for any "runny noses", coughing, sneezing, etc... Separate those out and individually treat.
If you have another die in the near future, you should probably treat the whole flock with antibiotics in their water. I know we all hate using meds but it may be the best option.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't tell you why either but I'd check them all out and maybe do what cajungal said, antibiotics if necessary as you don't want to lose your entire flock.

| I have kept chickens for the last 7 years & I have had that happen several times in the past. And often the hens are not very old, I don't see it coming, and have no idea why they died. Ironically, my oldest hens are still around healthy & happy as can be. It always seems like a shock having no sign of illness or anything! I wish I knew what caused the "sudden death", but I just don't and usually by the time I find out it is too late to do anything about it. |

Hey Kristina,
Came home last night and found another one of our hens on her way out.
This momma was 5 or 6 years. Her comb had been faded for some time so she wasn't laying.
Poor thing stil had breath in her, so I gently scooped her up, placed a cloth over her head and gently placed her in the leaves about ahundred yards away in the woods.
I stood there watching as she took a final breath or two and closed her eyes and quietly expired.
It was kind of like she could finally relax and just let go

at lot of times, it is a heart attack, no warning, and no trauma to be seen...

I have 1 orpington who is older than any of the hens I have previously lost. They must be a hardy breed.
