I am looking for information on a few heritage breeds as I am looking into raising one.
Does anyone raise or have information on Canadienne, Milking Shorthorn, Milking Devon or Randall Lineback breeds of cattle? My favorite breed is the Brown Swiss but I am really interested in raising one of these heritage breeds.
For turkeys I am interested in learning more on the Royal Palm, Narragansett or Slate breeds.
Also, if anyone is raising a heritage breed I didn't list in my list of interests why did you choose that breed and how is it to raise regarding adaptability to where you live, reproducing, foraging, etc.
Thanks for you help!

I already have Nubian goats by default (long story) and I am pretty set on them for the time being. Someday I might be interested in expanding with the goat field. One thing for sure, I will always have a goat from now on! I grew up milking cows and before I go out and buy a Brown Swiss I thought I would try a heritage breed first. I also want turkeys because I want something different then everyone else in the area. I got a few different rare/ heritage breeds of chicks this year and whatever one does the best I am going to slowly start my own reproducing flock so I don't have to get new chicks every year. As for ducks we had runner ducks until the neighbor dog had dinner. We have one duck left but we are taking a break from ducks right now. I guess choosing a heritage breed is like choosing an heirloom seed for gardening; sustainability and history all in one. Thanks for your reply!

Krystle, I have Bourbon Red turkeys. They are very easy to raise. I got 10 last June and lost one due to getting too cold. They like to be WARM. ANyway, they are 9 months now. I have not gotten any eggs yet. I would love to see one. I have 4 hens with 1 tom and the other 2 toms are in another pen waiting for freezer time. I wanted to see if the hens would lay any eggs and maybe set on a nest. We'll see soon I hope. They are beautiful birds too. And I can herd them! They are easily trained. I have alweays been able to get them back in their coop when they are out.

krystle i had the royal white palms. they are so beautiful. my place was too small for them. they love to fly run and be out. i gave them away to some folks that had 100s of acres. not as easy going as the ones kris has. we have a mini cross jersey. we also have dexters. i like the dexters for beef a lot. they are very easy going and easy to load etc. i have a corriente heifer that is crossed with a jersey. she is very cute. cocoa is just now old enough to breed. i am thinking of using the milk belted mini bull semen with her. i think it would be a good mix. she is so small i need to be sure she could deliver a mini belted. my friend has a share herd dairy. she has jersey brown swiss. they are beautiful. my belle is all jersey. she is wonderful. in a few months when i can breed some of my girls i think i will use some brown swiss also. what do you like most about them? if i had the discretionary funds i would buy a registered white park heifer from seed savers. i dont so i have dexters that are white park coloring and not registered. i love their look and personality. they are tough as nails too. low fat low cholesterol if fed according to guidelines. calve easy cold tolerant. so just a few ideas. how much land do you have for them? smaller is easier when it comes to poop piles too.LOL hope it helps you a little. happy days sherrye

Sherry, what I love most about the Brown Swiss is how much more expressive they are compared to the Jerseys, Galloways, and Holsteins I have been around. They are so sweet yet they produce such wonderful milk. Maybe I will just stick to the Brown Swiss after all. Cows are usually pretty happy looking animals but it just seems like the Swiss just talk and say "good morning" for morning milkings. The Holsteins would just walk in like it is the same ol' same ol, the Jerseys were crabs for morning milking like "how dare you wake me from my beauty sleep" and the Brown Swiss were "good morning, its a great new day". I guess after being around cows so long you start personifying them or something.
As for the Royal white palms do they prefer to free range or can they be put in a smaller pasture area like 75'x75'? I would prefer a more laid back turkey that isn't going to terrify my kids. I guess that is why I would put them in the fence with the horse and goats because I don't want my kids afraid of farm animals. Which is why I am waiting to get into geese until the kids are old enough to fend for themselves!
Kristin: When you say the Bourbon Red's like it warm do you think they could handle Wisconsin? Obviously they would have an indoor coop too but I just want to make sure they would be ok to handle the weather up here.
Thanks for all the websites I am going to check them all out, Thanks!
