I am just heartsick. If you have followed about my cat Annabelle at all - 10 days ago she was not well and I thought she was dying. she is still hanging on, barely eating, barey drinking, barely if at al using litter box -
I have been giving her whatever she was willing to eat - tuna, whatever. She is hiding under my bed and won't come out for me. Won't drink water, won't eat. :((((((((((((((((((
I hate to bring her to the vets where she might be upset. I pick her up every day and hold her for a while, stroking her back - I just love Annabelle so much! I guess what I need to know if please tell me I am doing right by Annabelle. I hate taking her to a vet. I know she is dying. There is two things you owe to your dear sweet pet - a good life, and a good death. Please tell me I am doing the right thing. Annabelle is 18 years old. I really hate to upset her by taking her to the vet to be "put down". Please farmsisters, let me know if I am diong right by my beloved Annabelle, :.((

Ah, Barbara, my heart is breaking for you. But please - take her to the vet. She is suffering, and you really don't want to prolong that, if you don't have to. Keep us posted. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Poor Barbara, My heart goes out to you,
Does your vet make housecalls? Many vets do (or will), especially if it may be your kitty's time.
All the farmgirl sisters here are absolutely right. Having her suffer is no way to go. It is a very, very difficult thing to go through though--I know.
My prayers are with you and your sweet Annabelle,
Karen

Barbara I will keep you and your Annabelle in my prayers, We had to put our 21 year old cat Prancer to sleep in December and it broke my heart. The only thing that made it easier for me was that my vet came to our home and put her to sleep here, he passed peacefully in my arms and I knew he was no longer suffering. It still hurt so bad but I knew it was the right thing to do, he was no longer suffering. I hope this helps you.

I hope that the vet is able to help her. The cat we had when I grew up in her later years died earlier this year at 21 years old. Several years earlier my parents thought it was the end for her but she just had a infection, which the vet was able to get her some meds that helped. So she was at least able to at least live a few more years.

Yes, my vet came to the house too.
I hope this service is available to you as I think it would help you feel better, but even if it is not, remember that you will be with her and that your presence will be the most important thing to her. She knows you love her...

I am praying for both you and Annabelle! I went through something similar with our dog and at that time we couldn't afford a vet so we treated her at home. With Gods help she did get better. Anyway, I am glad you decided to take her to a vet. :)They will be able to help her. *Big Hugs to you both!!* Hannah

P.s. I've been playing around with the spelling of my name ( weird I know) and I've decided that I will stick with Hannah for good. Sorry I got you all confused. Hugs!! |

Our thoughts are with you. In recent years, our very elderly dog left us, then three of our very old cats. The dog and one cat needed house calls from the vet, but two others left quietly and in the way you describe. there was just a slow slipping, with clearly no pain at all, just a shutting down. If you think there is suffering, then you want that to end, but if she is just 'turning out the light', perhaps it's okay to stay with her and let her go at her own pace. Much love. |

If she is hiding, she knows. It's time, and you will be doing the right thing. I agree that finding a vet who will come to your home is easiest on the cat. The vet will provide a very strong sedative to calm the kitty and let her drift off into kitty la-la land before the final injection completes the procedure. You may kiss and cuddle your little baby right through the whole thing while she is made comfortable on your bed, or other favorite place. This is never an easy thing to do, but it is really the kindest thing you can do for Annabelle. Just think of what a wonderful, loving home you've given her. |

I had to take one of our cats in to be put down a few years ago. She was in a similar state as Annabelle- she slept almost 20-22 hours a day and only woke up to eat, drink and use the litterbox if she even went that far. She was at least 17 years old, I'm not positive (she was my Mother in laws cat) so I'm not sure when they got her. She didn't like cars or the vet. She especially didn't like having her paws touched. She snapped at me more than once just for bumping her paw if she was laying by me. When I took her in to the vet, they had to shave some fur off her foreleg where the needle would go... As the vet tech grabbed her paw to straighted out her leg I almost stopped her (I didn't want her to get bitten) but the cat just laid there, happy as could be. She didn't try to jump off the table and get away or anything. It was like she knew she was going to be helped, and was content to just sit there until the pain went away. I don't know if this will help you or not, but it was definitley the right choice for our old kitty.

I agree with you about the things you can give your pet--a good life, and a good death. If she isn't using the litterbox, it is probably very near her time. I know this pains you very, very much. Would your vet consider coming to the house to euthanize her? Some vets offer this service, now, especially with pets that are unable to be transported (like my 14 year old Husky, Lily...her legs had given out and I was too small to lift her VERY large frame). She passed quietly in my arms, with all her familiar smells around her.
Does she seem to be in pain? If so, then do call the vet. They may be able to give you something to ease that and let her go quietly if they can't come to the house.
I'm so sorry--this is a terrible thing to see, but you will be both sad and relieved when she passes. She will always be with you, she will have simply changed form.

I am so very sorry. :-( I have also been in your situation. Losing a family member is always devastating, and our pets truly are our family. My heart goes out to you both. :-(

i am so sorry to here about your kitty.....i had an 18 year old kitty---his name was anthony. towards the end he developed so many problems, the urine would just leak out of him and so we couldn't really hold him like we always did.....eventually it was apparent that it wasn't fair to make him continue living like that even though i always said i would never have him put to sleep. we did finally decide to do that because it was unbearable to see him like that everyday. i still cry to this day thinking about him. i truly feel for you. |

Oh Barbara, my heart goes out to you. We too recently had to standby(at the Vets) as our beloved Ms Beasley went across The Rainbow Bridge...I know it's hard, but be there for Annebell as she passes. You'll cry tears of saddness(for you), and relief( for her) and you will find yourself days later suddenly crying....but it's ok to mourn the loss of a beloved pet. Hugz to you & Annebell

Dear Barbara,
This is truly one of the most difficult moments you will face with your pet, but is also the most humane. You precious kitty is moving on and is suffering. Please take her to the vet and have them help her. We have 4 cats and although I have not had this incident with them, I did have to take our 18yr old dog to the vet a few years ago. He was old, couldn't walk and couldn't control his bladder anymore. I took him to the vet, they saw him immediatly, and gave him a shot to help him cross over. The doctor was very kind, and I stroked him and told him how much I loved him and thanked him for being my best friend for 18 yrs. As much as I hated to let him go, it was the right thing to do. You will not regret it, I promise you. I am praying for you my Farmgirl friend....Hugs, Erica |
