My oldest grand daughter became sick on Sunday night with a high fever. She's had it off and on since then, but seems to be on the road to recovery. On Monday night, my grandson, who is 1, developed the fever. By yesterday morning, he had a rash on his face, would only breastfeed, became very lethargic and his fever shot up to over 104. Yesterday afternoon my daughter could see that the right side of his face was swollen. She took him into the dr. and they diagnosed probable mumps, but did bloodwork to be sure, since it will have to be reported to the CDC. Late last night, she had to rush him to the ER because his face was so bad, they were worried about cellulitis, rare but dangerous in babies. Nope- he just has a very bad case of mumps! Poor baby, he turns one tomorrow and isn't due for his first MMR shot until next month. Now, I think they are going to test my grand daughter too, because even though she had her MMR when she was a baby, there are 5-10 % of people where the vaccine doesn't take. It is obviously rare, but it does sound like she has a milder case of the mumps. I have to work all day today, so won't be able to go help them out, poor Freddie is just miserable.

As horrible as mumps can be better he has them now than when he is older. I was one of those lucky children (now 47) that had mumps and measles before I was old enough to get vaccinated. Not very common anymore but does happen.
