| Did anyone watch the Martha Stewart show the other day that high lighted these old fashioned gardening terrariums? I LOVE them!! I WANT ONE! I looked them up online & they R not cheap. They're so pretty & romantic...& they bring the outdoors INSIDE. They said they don't take much care once they're set up & they don't need direct sunlight. Anyone have one? |

No, but I grew them in the 70's...they were all the rage back then. We used everything from big gallon jars to fish tanks back then. They were very fun to grow! I didn't see the Martha Stewart show but knowing her she used something much fancier that we ever would have back then. That was the Hippie era and we were so into our organic Mother Earth Life Style but did everything we could to re-purpose the old. Kind of like "Going Green" is re-discovering today! You should try making some though Juddaca...they are fun to do!

Did not see the MS show. Sounds pretty! But, oh yeah..the 70's and growing things in anything we could. You are right..it's de ja vu.

Oh my gosh, I looked up the Wardian Boxed Gardens on line and spendy isn't even the word! Take my advice and get an old fish tank or a big gallon jar, or a beautiful old candy jar at an antiques store...even if you had to spend $20-$50.00 for it...you would be way ahead! Mercy...what some people won't do to make money! lol

in the 70's you could buy these huge plastic tables that had the terrarium on the top...
wow- i did not know this was coming full circle....i love martha but cannot afford her!!!!!

I missed the Martha Stewart episode but there was an extensive article about Wardian cases in a German garden magazine I subscribe to last summer. They are so cool, but I just don't have room in my house for one.....instead I'm thinking about upgrading my Venus Flytrap plant to new digs in a jar on my windowsill. On a much larger scale....I saw a very nicely crafted terarium "house" at an auction not long ago that had been made from small recycled windows.

| Here's a new use for the plain, clear-glass cake plate & dome: They made it into a table centerpiece/terrarium/substitute wardian box. They had planted moss & small ferns. It was so cute & spring-looking! Saw it in a magazine...cannot remember which one - may have seen it on online magazine? |

I found a picture online where they made one from large wooden picture frames with their glass insert.
{just the wood frame with the glass inside, everything else removed}. If you can find a thrift store that has lots of old frames, you could make one & buy the decor touches from the craft store. Paint the frames your color choice, seal the glass to the frame with silicone caulk, screw the wood portions together in a box shape. For the top, using proper size glass/wood frames, make the roof A frame top. Measure the open end A frame spots with like a paper grocery bag for template. Have the local hardware store cut your glass {leave a 1/2 to full inch gape for air circulation} and silicone it in place.
If you want it to have a glass bottom, measure the bottom same as the paper method above & have the hardware store cut it to size when you buy the glass. Just silicone caulk it in place too. { I would suggest some of those little circle felt or rubber "feet" so it does not sit flush with your table top/shelf. Prevents scratching & possible glass breakage.
I plan to make one this Spring with this exact method. I will be sure to put up a tutorial on my blog for others who may be looking to make an inexpensive one. Some of the craft stores have pretty wood decor pieces you could paint to match and they could just be glued on the top, etc.
Just thought I would share my brainstorm since I too would like a terrarium. The wood victorian ready made ones are pricey but it is possible to make your own and come up with a similar look. |

| I got one yesterday on the clearance shelves of Hobby Lobby - $40. It's very sweet, large, but not my favorite color - distressed barn red. I can live w/ the color at that price - may paint later. Has nice romantic details w/ metal curly-Q's. I figure it's cheapear than if I made it, BUT, please report back when it's on your blog!! I cannot wait to see it! |

| I did find a tut on the Country living mag for making the picture frame simple terrarium. No decor. I am hoping the trip to the thrift store will be fruitful & inexpensive for the framed glass I need. Sometimes those items in our local thrift are priced almost as much as if I just go to a regular store. lol. |

I found this adorable small Terrarium at my Favorite Antique Store in Portland OR yesterday for $18.00
It is about the size of a Gallon Jar. For now I just put an African Violet in it and hung the butterfly. I
thought it looked cute next to my indoor Bee Skept. In the same Vignette they had a small Wardian Box Garden
on legs (used) for $125.00. I think I got the better deal! Will eventually do a regular Terrarium in mine.

Janie...checked out all three web-sites. Very Retro and way cool! Loved the last site where you could
get the base in any color you liked. That was awesome! But liked the more affordable prices on the first
web-site. Thanks for sharing. I hope others will check those out too. I would purchase any of them over
the Wardian Terrariums.

Glad to help. Moved and got rid of mine, wish I still had it! Starting seeds right now and can use all the space I can get for it.
