hello my dear Hens.....I am curious to find what is the one thing you have that you just will not give up.....it can be anything that is in your house, garage, barn or shed.
Me? Well its a 1930's petal sewing machine that I got at a second hand store in Branson, Missouri way back in 1983, the lady let me pay $1 a week until I got it paid off ($85) This is not the heavy framed metal stand type like a Singer...Its an off brand that was made for Montgomery Wards. It has traveled thur 25 moves in college, been in Arkansas, Georgia & now Massachusetts...My now husband doesn't get that even though I haven't used it in a while I will not sell it/give it away/junk it.....I tore the whole thing apart wood frame included & cleaned, oiled & wood glued this baby....I love using it when I make heavy duty quilts like with wool & denim...since the petal attaches to the wood frame instead of metal (like singer) its very noisy to all but me....you can hear this puppy thur the floor....lol...Michele'

Hmmmm.... hard choice, but I'd have to say the farm itself. It's just brought too much, peace, contentment and hard learned lessons to ever walk away from it.

Over the past 4 years,I've had to give up almost everything. The two things I just can't part with are 1) the necklace my oldest son made me when he was six using an antique drawer pull and the beaded chain he swiped from the laundry room light and 2) the vintage porcelin robbin who has sat on my stove in every house i've had.

I have a couple of pairs of pj's. Sounds ridiculous, I know, but they were what I curled up in to watch a movie, dream of my picket fences, or do Saturday morning chores in all through high school. They have been with me from the first night out of mommy and daddys house, and through all the pregnancies of my four children. I sat and nursed in these pajamas, read quietly in the mornings in these pajamas, and opened many a present or stocking on Christmas morning in these pjs. They are better than a favorite old pair of shoes. I don't think I'll ever give em up!

I would say it would have to be my husband. "til death due us part". He is my rock. Then it would be my fur babies. Everything else is just stuff. Yes, I wouldn't want to lose it but it's still just stuff.

oh ladies...good job...I adore the PJ's comment....they would like a wonderful old friend & i think that is such a wonderful story behind them I love the husband comment as well but...
I am going to make this harder...this can not include pets, people or houses/farms its got to be a thing that you have carried with you no matter where you move :)
Sarah I sure do understand the book thing...until we moved here 3 years ago I had a huge library....that I turned my dining room into...it was my choice to thin them out....1000 hardback & paperback books when to charity & it made me cry at the time.....we at one time had 10,000 lbs of books that the military was not happy about us moving. I at least when thinned them down kept the ones I knew I would use over & over again. I am good now at passing books on, & have a wonderful neighbor with the same interest so I share with her & ask her to pass them to someone else.

This is tough one for me. I'm thinking my daughter, Violet's, baby book. I have several fabric "keepsake" boxes of certain era's of my life, our married life, etc. that contain LOTS of memories--I'd have to bring those, too.

| This is interesting because I move every 2yrs. Fortunatly, we get to move with all of our stuff coming with us. But, it is truly not the stuff, or the house you live in that is important. My moving statement after all these yrs as a military wife is ... "home is not where you live~it is the people you are with". For us that rings true...without my husband, children, pets and friends in my life..where I live is nothing without them. They are what makes my life complete. As a wife who says goodbye to her husband every few yrs for 6+ months deployments, you feel an emptiness in your heart and home without him there..and then you force yourself to keep moving on for the sake of your family and country. We also have 3 children...one is a sophmore in college in Pa (not even close to where we live), and our son will be going into the military in Aug...as they all leave the nest, I am fully aware of how fast they have grown up and am saddened that the most important things in my life are moving on with theirs. I am extremely proud, but miss them so very much in my daily life. Thank goodness we still have one more daughter who will not leave us for another 6 yrs or so...:) With all of this being said, you have truly made it hard for me to decide what one thing I would take with me....I don't know...except to say, if I can't include people...it would have to be my camera. With that little device, I could still store some pics of my family, friends and animals as well as document in photos the new life I would have. This is really difficult, because everything we have, if it was lost, damaged and ruined..is replaceable....so yes it would be my camera.....that is the one thing I would want to take with me:) Hugs:) |

I have a little music box with a picture of my son and daughter on it. The picture is of the two of them in a big bubble bath. I wind it up and play it every once in a while and the memories come rushing back. It plays that melancholy song fromt he musical Cats.

The one 'Thing' I could not give up is my family picture collection. I have been truly blessed by having in my possession very old pictures and evan tintypes of both my husband's and my side of the family. I have scanned them, saved them on flashdrives and even pay for an online source to protect the many vintage photographs. I also share them with as many of the family members that want them. They are a treasure.

My books....at last count well over 10-years ago above 1000-I even card catalogued them. I know it's terrible, but every time I try to "cull" some from my stacks I just can't do it. My books are all very nice hard backs with a few well made paper backs.
My husband just rolls his eyes when I complain that I have nothing to read! I think I must have been a librarian in a former life...

Way too many things. But I can start with my Bible signed by Robert Schuller, My Daddy's dinner bucket and cane, Momma's Singer sewing machine, my squash blossom necklace. Books and more Books but mainly my cook books. My grandpa's tool box, my other grandpa's pressure canner, My Daddy's Farmall tractor. Then there is my doll that I got for my 5th christmas and the picture of my granddaughter that hangs on the wall above the doll that sits on my great grandmother's little rocker. My granddaughter was about 5 months old in the picture and she is wearing the dress that my doll now wears. These things cannot be replaced nor are they worth insuring. Are they valu-ble or valu-less?

Erica I too am a military wife (23 yrs now) & am getting ready again for husband to leave in about 2 weeks for a year in Afghanistan...he was gone 15 months when he left for Iraq.....thank goodness I am older so i can sorta deal with it...no little children to worry about...I am so happy to see so many responses to this it has been wonderful to see the different things we treasure...love the music box....that is a great memory....M'

Since potentially every single thing could be taken from a person, whether they wanted to part with it or not, what I would not give up is the ability to choose one's attitude, the way you choose to think about any given set of circumstances. And while some may not be able to directly choose their circumstances, what they can do that nobody can ever take away from them is shape those circumstances by the way they choose to think about them.
This might be a little bit deeper than what you were looking for, lol. Okay, let's see - everything single thing gone except that one thing you would not part with, no matter what. My hen, Sadie.

It would have to be some of my embroidery patterns. I know this sounds silly but if I lost everything excluding my family and dogs. I would need something to keep my hands busy and keep me from going stir crazy... I could probably buy more so I am not really too worried but I need things to keep my hands busy...

The little book I received when I made my first Communion in second grade. The section on the Mass is boring, but it has the life of Christ in pictures and short readings. and it has some basic prayers in it. I've slept with it under my pillow.

My pictures of my children and grandchildren. Pictures and memories are all I have left of my youngest daughter. It would for sure be that.

I have a heart locket my boys gave me one year for Mothers day. It has both their pictures in it when they were young boys. I wear it every day and plan on being laid to rest wearing it. I would give up every material item I own except for that.

I could not part with my pictures. I have albums of my kids growing up and now have albums of my two granddaughters. They are not replaceable because you can't go back in time and retake those photos.

Well I know one thing that I won't loose is all the memories I have of my children and grand children that I love to go back to on those lazy days when I sit on my back deck. I think I could give up just about but I would not give up my photo albums of my grand kids and kids.
