Has anyone tried the "Diva Cup?" I've seen it advertised but never tried it before. I'm going on a trip in a little more than a month and am scheduled to be on my period while we're there, pretty much ruining my chance to swim in the hotel pool!

I use it and I LOVE it. Not only do I save money because I do not have to buy tampons, I also am making a "green" choice. You have to be ok with getting pretty upclose and personal with yourself. Once you get over that, you will love it. I have recommended it to every female I know, and most of them tried it and still use it to this day. I would never use tampons again. I think it's easier. The cup I used before I turned post-menopausal was real rubber, and rather thick, so even though it was a lot smaller than a diaphragm (about an inch wide at the top, tapering down to a little tube), it could be a bit rough to put in place on the first and last day. A little KY on the edge helped it go in more easily. It's such a wonderful alternative to tampons or napkins. The only thing that would make it tricky to use is if you have to empty it in a public rest room that has those annoying (but green!) sink faucets that only release a little water at a time -- barely enough to wash your hands properly, let alone rinse out a menstrual cup AND wash your hands. Then, you'd have to go back in a stall to reinsert it, wash hands again, and so on.
You know what? This is making me realize what a blessing cronehood is! :-) |

I have a very heavy period, and I have to empty it more often on my heavy days. My friends that use it and I have a code phrase for it - we always joke that "my cup runneth over". You will probably need a pad until you see how you respond to it to avoid any leakage.
On my normal days, I can wear it all day without any worries. The Diva cup has been such a wonderful item for me. I did not want to spend the almost $40 for it. I knew I could not return it if I did not like it, but after spending almost $10 a month on pads and tampons - I though at least it would pay for itself quickly. After using it for 2 plus years now I can honestly say it is priceless. It is comfortable, it is easy to put in and take out, it does not feel like I am ripping a layer of skin off when I take it out (like it does with a tampon), it does not contain bleach like a tampon, I spent the one time cost and I am done spending money on my period FOREVER!, I do not have to carry tampons around with me (like when they fall out of my purse when I am paying for something), I do not have to change the trash can that is full of my tampons and pads during my period, I could go on and on. Try it, you will love it.

I have been wondering about getting one as well. I switched to organic cotton tampons but still it is a monthly (unless I'm pregnant!) cost. I am a little embarrassed to look it up online to figure out how to use one if I get one and my question is, when you buy one does it have instructions on how to use it? I've never used a diaphragm so the thought of trying to figure it out without instructions (and being to embarrassed to look it up online) freaks me out!
Catherine: One time a friend needed chapstick so I went into my pocket to let her use mine and instead I forgot it was in the other pocket... I pulled out a tampon. Oops! We still joke about it! Priceless memories I guess :)

Lindsay, I came to the menstrual cup solution kinda late in the game, age 50 or so. At the time, like many pre-menopausal women, my periods were downright profuse for a year or so. I found I had to duck into a bathroom to deal with overflow every two hours or more some days. You have to get to know your own pattern, if you don't have a good idea already. I wish I'd bought one much earlier in my life. I'd have saved so much money, for one thing.
edited to add this: This is the type I used. http://www.keeper.com/ I compared it with the Diva Cup and it seems to me that it's a little easier to remove because of the little "tail." If it really is like the one I used, you squeeze the tail (over the toilet, of course) to open a sort of drainage slit in it to empty the cup without removing it. I see that it comes in a version now for women allergic to latex. It's cheaper, too. Fascinating topic. I wish there had been women to talk to about this kind of stuff when I was young. Nobody would. *sigh* |

I have used one for 10 years. It works very well.
I'm 50 and the first 36 hours are very heavy (4 to 8 ounces)I do wear a light pad on those days if I'm going to be away from rest room.

Jessie, I've been using one for about a year now. It took me a little bit to get used to it only because I realized that having a tipped uterus, it needs to settle in on an angle. Once I figured that out, it's worked good. I love the freedom of not having to carry tampons with me whether I'm gone for just the day or on a vacation. On the heavier days, I wear a liner in case of leaks. The other thing that was an issue in the beginning was that the stem on the cup was too long, causing discomfort. I would cut a little off at a time until I found a length that wasn't a bother anymore. I think I found this tip by watching a helpful video on YouTube. Yes, there's even tutorial videos on the Diva/Moon cup!
I love the idea that I spent the $ up front & won't need to replace it for up to 10 years, saving "green" in more ways than one!

um, I've always swam in a pool even when on a period. And I've even had very very heavy periods. I have never had blood come out while in the water. Seems to stop the flow. (I mean have you ever taken a bath while on your period, the water never gets bloody or even cloudy) and secondly public pools are drowned in chlorine, so if there was even a small chance of any blood leaking into the pool (which again I've never ever experienced) there would be no health problems from it. They have to drown the pool in chlorine from all the people pooping and peeing in the pool already which I think is a bit more disgusting then the period situation! lol hahaha So I would go swimming with or with out the diva cup. (I don't wear a pad in my swim suit and never any blood in the crotch area, also with my theory based on my baths, and my mother always said the water stopped the flow, is what has lead me to believe this).

I don't have any experience with this but my daughter loves hers. She said she was tired of buy products all the time. And after her daughter was born she went right back to using the Diva Cup. So I think it would be worth a try.
