My mom, shes 86 has started drinking green tea. Have any of you heard of it causing dirreha and being sick to your stomach? After starting the tea she has not felt good at all. I took her off of it and put her on gaterade and liquids for a few days and she is feeling better. I just don't know if she had a little bug or if her body just can't handle the green tea. I'm hoping to hear if anyone else has experienced this.

Green Tea has soooooooo many health benefits for all of us, including being really high in antioxidants. Having diarrhea definitely isn't one of them. The problem with diarrhea is of course dehydration. So it was good that you did replenish her fluids with Gatorade. You might try her first on an herbal tea first and then see how that goes. Then you might try her on a Green Tea (decaf) and just prepare it mildly with a little honey. Could it have been prepared too strong in the preparation time? I can see that happening. It's only about 3 minutes of brewing time or the leaves become very bitter. You might like to add a little honey for sweetening.

The only negative side effect of GREEN TEA that I have read about is insomnia due to the fact that it contains caffeine. However, green tea contains less caffeine than coffee: there are approximately thirty to sixty mg. of caffeine in six - eight ounces of tea, compared to over one-hundred mg. in eight ounces of coffee. Not a drink you'll want right before bedtime.

If you add raw honey to your tea, then you'll be adding the honey benefits as well to your drink.

Here's those side effects that you were looking for.....

You should not drink excessive amounts of brewed green tea. The usual recommendation is 3 to 4 cups of tea a day.

If you drink more than 5 to 6 cups of green tea daily you may experience sleeplessness, irregular heart beat, dizziness, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, loss of appetite or other caffeine-related side effects.

You should use green tea cautiously if you have a weak heart, tendency to anxiety or panic attacks, kidney disease or a sensitive stomach.

A gentleman who owns a tea shop in Vermont also told me that green tea needs to be brewed carefully or it will be too strong and bitter.

1. Do NOT bring the water to a boil. Only bring it close to boiling - when the kettle makes a noise like it is getting ready to boil, pour it over the leaves.

2. Only steep it for 2-3 minutes.

Green tea used to make my stomach get upset, but once I started brewing it this way, no more problems.

I found when I drink green tea, I get dehydrated, so I must have water on hand. I don't have this trouble with black teas unless I drink alot. We all react differently to foods. I agree with Jennifer, the steep time is a big deal. If left too long I can't drink it either.

Good luck,
Laurie

Thank you all for all the info. She was starting to feel better and than drank a cup of the green tea and was feeling bad again. She does have kidney and heart problems and I think I'll keep her off of it until we see dr. Thank you again. She's at the age that she doesn't want to go to dr. because she says all they do is stick her in the hospital. Which is usually the thing they do. I do think we are going to have to soon come up with a idea for her health and safety. Shes really strong minded and wants to do for herself, but not doing too well with it right now. Could use some prayers for what is ahead of us. Hugs to all of you, Brenda

I can sure understand about your mother. My mom is going to be 80 years young this October. I have a hard time getting her to do things that I know will be good for her. My mom won't drink tea at all. She drinks hot water. Did you have her try any herbal teas (no caffeine at all)? That would be good too for her and very calming. I like mint and peppermint and lavendar and chamomile and rose tea.

Every once in a while I try Green Tea but every single time I end up throwing it out. I just cannot take the taste of it. I LOVE tea-been drinking gallons since I was a teen.

During the day I have at least 3 cups of Black/Orange Pekoe with some wonderful honey from (The Hoffman Ranch) in North Dakota-Sorry Julie had to plug that!!-But I stay away from the Green Tea-I do use brewed Green Tea when I make my Green Tea soap though-LOL!

Wish I could get used to the taste, but it just ain't happening. And it's sooooooooooo good for you too-Uggh.

I don't seem to have any problems with drinking green tea, but I did have some vitamins that contained it. Boy, did they ever make me sick. I could almost predict 30 minutes after I took them I'd need to lie down due to the nausea. I stopped taking them!

Mom seems to be doing much better now. She hasn't had anymore green tea, so who knows. Just thankful she's better. And has been able to start eating again. I still have her drink her gaterade everyday. Thanks for all the help. Hugs, Brenda
