Last night was a little scary,Nelson wasn't feeling good he started limping on his left front leg and he kept wanting to lay down rather that play,he had a bottle at 9:00pm and still didnt cry for one by 3:00 am tryed anyway and he did not want it, so I gave it til 5:00am then ate half, then thank goodness 8:00am he was rearing to go ate all his milk and wanted to play. squirt and I where up all night worrying. As I write this he is laying at my feet on a blanket sleeping of course so is squirt. to answer your question Kathryn yes I will be keeping him when he healthy enough I'll have him fixed and he'll spend the rest of his life here. Linda you are right it is worth all the love the animals give back ,sad to say sometimes I would rather be with them than people, at least the don't judge. I just pray he'll keep getting better. Oh Nelson is such a sweetheart - Penny I am so glad to read that he turned the corner and is back eating. Maybe a nice nap today will help I know I am hoping for one. It is wonderful that Squirt is there to keep an eye on him too - this should give you some comfort.
Hugs to all and please keep us informed.

Penny,
Eventually he will probably start taking more at each feeding and take fewer bottles over time. Hopefully that is what is going on with him. I know when I bottle feed by the time they are a week old I feed them about every 6 hours and then get down to 3 bottles a day every 8 hours. By then they are up to 20 ounces each feeding. I would try putting him on probios everyday because the antibiotics are very hard on a new baby goat. You maybe doing this already.... I just remembered you saying you were a vettec. Well goodluck with Nelson and remember your doing the best you can for him and thats all you can do.
p.s. I know what you mean about animals and people. I feel the same way most of the time. . Give Nelson a hug from me.
Take care Linda

We are off to the vets again tuesday, nelson has developed blisters on his mouth, hoping its not sore mouth disease that sheep and goats get because if it is,humans can get it also, plus he is having alot of trouble walking without pain, there is no more swelling but it looks like his joints are very sore, the only good note it hasnt affected his appetite, but he wont run around and play. once again wait and see what the vet thinks.hope for the best, Penny:( |

Penny, I have had a baby goat on Banamine for about 1 1/2 weeks for a fever but never more than that. I wonder if switching him to prednazone for short term would do his joints better. I also wonder if the penicillin is only partly taking care of his problem. Just a suggeston but wonder if a 7 to 10 day course of Naxell would be better. Just a thought I am surely no expert but when something is not totally solving the problem maybe a new course of action would be better. He sounds like he has joint ill and its hard to kick. Anyway hope you figure something out with the vet and best of luck. I know you are very worried.
Prayers and hugs.

Back from the vets this morning got a good report, his infection is gone now we have to deal with the damage and soreness to his joints, the vet said it would probably take about a month for that to happen, in the mean time he said to give asprin when needed for the soreness.he is much better today still eating and going to the bathroom,I think the penicillin was making him feel sick since thats done he acts alot better. thank you everyone for your support I'll keep you updated and more pictures. Relieved to hear the good news!!! I bet you are so relieved. I was worried the infection was still there from the symptons he had and thats why I brought up maybe switching meds. Thank goodness you don't have to do that. So glad he is eating better and maybe now you can relax mentally. You both take good care.
