UGH! They don't have an icon in tears, whipping her beginner's kit across the room. I found my kit I had bought clear back before I found out about MJF, and decided to try it tonight while hubby was taking his on-line test for his college class - NOT! ![](icons/icon_smile_angry.gif)
Would the needle tatting be easier for a beginner? SO frustrating. The paper has half the instructions on one side, then I have to flip it with strings in my hand and it's not working out too well. I found two books I have on my craft book shelf, and they are no help either. It's so hard to see where the strings are etc. Are there better instructions on the Internet? I looked at one, but the lady was going superdy duperdy fast ![](icons/icon_smile_shock.gif)

Hi Kathy from Moses Lake! This is Claudia from Deer Park. Years & years ago, I saw a craft show on HGTV with a woman who was a specialist with needle tatting. She said it was easier and showed her technique. I got her kit. It was easy enough, but I did not follow through to do anything more with the picots. I found her website. You can see what you think. Blessings!

You are becoming multi-talented Kathy! And when I was in grade school, my music teachers kept telling me to "practice practice practice!" So get at it there!

I prefer needle tatting myself and agree that Mary Jane's instructions are one of the best. My SIL found some great videos on You-Tube that demonstrate how to do shuttle tatting. I haven't had time to explore them yet but she was able to make sense of the instruction books once she saw the videos.
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

I taught myself to needle tat last year using the Handy Hands books from the library - those are by the author talked about above. I found her books actually even more clear than MJ (sorry MJ but true). Needle tatting is MUCH easier than shuttle! I now want to do shuttle tatting - there are reasons for both - just haven't had time with all my other interests lol. There is a great online group that teaches tatting, either needle or shuttle, here: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/ they have a yahoo group and do live chats as well, a great group of gals who will help you with questions and also build up advanced skills gradually if you like. I highly recommend Georgia and her gang.
As for needles, neither my local Joann's or Michael's carries them but the closest Hobby Lobby does. If not, the Helping Hands site is the way to go. Those needles are actually the ones carried almost everywhere online that sells tatting needles. Be wary of eBay - someone on there is selling doll needles but labeling them tatting needles and several gals have been burned. The seller apparently doesn't know the difference.

I'm working on learning tatting as well and I have the Handy Hands book. Actually bought her kit which comes with the book, a ball of thread and a #5 needle. So far, so good . . . only been at it a couple days. There is NO place around here to get supplies. CJ

I have put in a request to get a dvd on tatting from the library. Including some books as well to learn. I have purchased a shuttle but couldn't find the tatting needle. Were do you purchase them at? I looked at Joann's and didn't seem them. I did see they are available thru Amazon but do not really want to pay for the shipping. I have looked at a few of the tatting videos on youtube.

I was off work from Dec until this week after surgery and my project for the recovery was to teach myself tatting. I simply got nowhere using a shuttle I just don't seem to be able to 'get' what it is i'm meant to do. So I tried needle tatting and could do it instantly - so I definately a convert.

well, I'm having fun with tatting . . but unexpectedly having MORE fun with making what I call "snippets" of tatted pieces in whatever design I can come up with to use on my cards and journals. I LOVE having more fun and interesting things to add to my papercraft items. Now on to the butterflies and flowers!! CJ
