I need help girls. I think my little leghorn roo might have gotten frostbit, it was -25 here yesterday. They are kept inside, but with no heat. Everyone else looks fine, but he has a huge comb and wattles. The wattles are a little discolored half way up, also warm and real swollen. His comb doesn't appear to have hardly any damage. Will the wattles get better on their own? Is there anything I can give him or put on him?

Take care, Melissa.

I am so sorry to read your post. I would say watch the swelling because that has to do with the blood flow. What I do to hold of frostbite is to slather on Vaseline on the combs and wattles when I know the temp is going to drip really low... Over the years it does wonders. Also alot of the times why they get frost bit is because the dip their waddles into the water, it gets wet and then freezes. Many have suggested to take the water away during the bitter time of the night so this can not happen and return the water early in the morning after the temp rises.

I hope you guy is doing better - please let us know

I use bag balm, but it so much like vaseline I do not think there would be much difference.
I have had this in the past. And went well with healing. It did take a little and the waddles turned like pink/purple first. But I think he will do fine. I would go ahead and put something on him now. It will just help from hime getting any further damage.

God Bless

Thanks girls, I just got home from work and he hasn't changed much. I put vasoline on him for tonight. Tomorrow I will go to Tractor Supply for some Bag Balm. Thank you so much for your help. I hate to see the poor little guy so uncomfortable, but I'm praying this will help him.

Take care, Melissa.
