On the way home this afternoon I stopped at the Dollar General to get a bag of cat food. I always buy the big 18 pound bags because I have so many cats. So I am at the checkout and there are these 2 boys there talking to the cute young cashier. One's about 16 and the other about 12. The 12 year old asks me where my car is and he'll take it out for me. I thought that was the sweetest thing any kid has ever done for me. So I go out to the car and he puts it in for me. I told thank you so much, what a sweetie you are.
So about halfway home it hit me. Did he do that because he was a nice kid or did he think I was too old to carry that bag of cat food out to my car? I mean, I put that 18 pound bag into the buggy by myself. Am I that age already? Do I look like a little old lady to a 12 year old boy now? Are they going to start asking me if I need help crossing the road? Am I a Boy Scout's dream woman? UGH!
I am not ready for this. I can carry 50 pound sacks of animal feed. Over my shoulder no less. I can put up fences. I can build animal shelters. I can walk 3 miles a day. And pretty darn fast too. I don't feel old.
I think I might need a make over.

oh kris, i am sorry but this is sadly funny. i know i do get offers for help. i know when i look in the mirror i wonder who that farmgirl is. i am happy like you and capable so i disregard my own worries and laugh forward.so i chuckle with you today happy days sherrye

I know. I want him and my granddaughter Chloe to get married when they are grown up. I should have gotten his phone number. I want to meet his mother and tell her what a great son she has. I was really amazed at how nice he was. I don't see that every day. And my grands are always telling me how mean boys are. I am just a little depressed and ready to go to the beaty salon now. Or maybe head to NY and get ambushed on the Today show.
My hubby just called and he said people are always opening doors for him and doing all kinds of nice things for him. Well, he's 62 and looks like Santa Clause already. Good grief!

Oh Kris I was laughing so hard as I started your thread because I love it when this happens to me.. If I am not at a feed store (because those boys throw feed all day long) I tell the kid "Sure, that would be nice" and then they get to my truck which tailgate does not go down and I watch them try and grab the big dog food bag and lift it up and over in the bed. They manage the first one but I have three Great Pry's and they eat a ton - by the third bag they can bearly lift it and so with the fourth and fifth bags I end up doing it myself. Then I turn to them and say would you like to come home with me and unload and pour the bags into the big drums??? Most of the time you can tell these kids are not doing farm work.
I admit as my sons keep reminding me - I am not getting younger but I can still do the work of most men half my age. So just giggle at those helpful boys and let them feel needed even when we really do not need them at all.. If your going in for a makeover will you take me???

Kris, maybe he was just being nice. I am sure you look wonderful. Maybe he had to "pay it forward". You made me chuckle, I feel the same way when someone calls me Mam. I do know that most of us "older" farmgirls could run circles around these young uns!

Okay ladies- I know I am youngish- not yet 30, but I get called Ma'am on the phone all the time (I have a telephone help service job) and I have heard my recorded voice! I think I sound like I am 12. Seriously. So...I just giggle a bit inside and accept it. Besides age is just an arbitrary assignment anyway. It doesn't really mean anything!

Oh my I was laughing.... I mean I feel old sometimes. I have been falling asleep by 9 pm!!! What is up with that, I use to go to bed at 12am and get up at 4am! Not anymore. I mean I do more now then when I was 20, or evene 25, ok even 30! But man s=does taht mean at nearly 40 I can't stay up late?
I think he was just being nice, but I wonder if he could hold a candle to what you do all day? I doubt it. Just giggle and go on!

I think it's wonderful that he offered, regardless of the reason.
On a side note, as a southen girl, I've always said my "ma'am's" and "sir's" However, when I was up on the PA/NY border one year teaching at a summer camp, the directors actually pulled me into their office and told me that some of the other adults found this to be offensive...
good manners offensive? go figure...

Oh Kris, That is to funny!! Don't start worrying about your age. I will be 50 in June and I am bound and determined not to let it bother me. My sister is 52 and that is all she talks and thinks about. She runs to the doctor all the time at every little ache and pain. I told her you can't be a sissy if you want to grow old. I would love to see some more kind and generous young men around here in Florida. They do not have the manners here like the southern boys!

Grace, that is so funny. Whenever you are ready, I could meet you halfway. The people at Tractor Supply only offer help if I ask them. So I always do it all myself unless my back is hurting.
Diane, you are right! I know I could. And maybe he's been taught that you treat people how you want to be treated.
Alee, my voice sounds so different when I hear it recorded. Not the way I think I sound at all. I sound just like my sister. I agree about age not meaning anything. The number anyway. I sure don't feel like I am 52. But then I have never been 52 before.
Angie, that's so funny. I'm sure you deserve a nap or two with all you do. You are busy and need a nap. So take it!
Sarah, that's awful. I was always taught growing up in the South (although I was born in Calif. and lived there off and on for years) that you say ma'am and sir to everyone, regardless how old they were. Now not so much. That boy never said ma'am to me.
Dorinda, I have noticed some things are different now that I am in my 50's. I look at my fingers and see the slow changes already in them. Especially my 2 middle fingers. They get more of the work when I am milking the goats.
I am going back to the dollar store. I forgot something. And I am going to ask who the boy is.

LOL ladies im gonna say it YES he thought you were old..lol My 13 yr old and my 10 yr old think im over the hill and half gone at 37...lol. I m gonna admit that at 12 anything over 13 was old...lol

| I'm from Georgia and was reared to use Ma'am and Sir. I also taught my kids that way. It's a sign of respect and good manners. Now that I'm in my 60's, I have learned that being an older woman has a tremendous advantage -- anytime you need customer service - just ask a young adult. I look like their grandmother and they are more than helpful. No one wants to be rude or unhelpful to their grandmother - LOL. We'll be in a store and young adult employees will walk right by my husband but they will ask me everytime "Ma'am, can I help you find something?". I guess it's OK to ignore your grandfather, but not your grandmother. Needless to say, I (Grannie) handle all customer service complaints for our family and I always get great service. |

Maybe you looked so "hot", he wanted you to be his "sugar momma"...or maybe he was broke and was hoping for a tip? Or heaven forbid, his mother raised him right and he was just being nice......

| i kinda think it was sweet of him to offer, that's a rarity around here nowadays but I was just thinkin the other day that as i get older, I'm 53, people start to treat you like your feeble minded or something..it's very annoying because I can still work rings around most youngsters |

Oh my goodness, you guys are so funny. I really need a laugh and I have laughed alot just reading all these posts here. I know it is inevitable that I will grow old (unless somethings happens) but I just don't want to right now. I want to stay young. And I want to see more nice boys and young men. They are out there. I just hope my 4 granddaughters can find some.
