Hello! My daughter was just given a gray female Dutch rabbit, and she is wanting to breed it to her chocolate male. She is not in 4-H yet, so has not learned anything about the colors, and what can be bred to what, so I thought I would ask for her! She really just wants to dive in and get some experience breeding, to see if this is something she wants to continue with. Thank you! Michelle |

Hi Michelle, My daughter was a veteran 4-Her with rabbits being her favorite area, her doe and litters often got blue ribbons. She had over 30 at one time. She said that the breeding your daughter is considering would produce mostly chocolate and gray (called blue) but since black is dominate she may also have black. If You have other question you could e-mail me and I'll refer them to Rachel. Susan

I would stay with like colors. The dutch are EXTREMELY hard to get any thing that is show quality. Out of 50 babies we have had only 5 that has been good enough to even go to the show table. I would recommend if she wants to breed for 4-h get a different breed of rabbit. here are the accepted colors for dutch ARBA-accepted varieties: Black, Blue, Chocolate, Steel, Gray, Tortoise We raise dutch also but stick with the black as it seems to be easier to get more show qaulity ones. We also have new breed of dutch they are trying to get arba but no luck yet getting it done. We up till 2 months ago had over 200 rabbits, now we still have over 70 and did keep just the black dutch. We have a breeding pair that have both won grand champion but havent gotten any showable babies out of them yet. The patterns have all been off. If she relly wants to show and breed i would recommend going with some other breed. We love the mini lops as the color pattern are either solid or broken..lol
