I got my first fiber sheep for Christmas this year!!! She's a Jacob sheep and she won champion at the Puyallup Fair (Washington's State fair)! I'll have to see if I can post a pic for you girls, I really think she's beautiful :). Anyway, my mom and husband surprised me with a visit to a farm and I got to pick her out of a flock of 30+. I'm a knitter and want to get into shearing and spinning.... Anyway, what I'm wondering is, I think the lady we bought her from said that they shear and do hooves in January, but that can't be right can it?? When do you girls shear?

I sheared mine in april but she was not having a baby. they usually shear one month before having a baby.... Some do shear really early but I did not have the heart to do that since here in michigan it still is very cold then. my goats I always make sure to breed them late so babies aren't born till april or may and then I shear them before they kid...

What a great Christmas present!
Is your ewe pregnant? If so I would shear her before lambing. If not, wait until the weather is starting to warm up. I live in Missouri and I shear in March but I start lambing in March too. If I was not lambing, I would probably shear in April.

Thanks ladies, there is a possibility that she's pregnant, when they delivered her they told us that the ram had got in the ewe field soooo... if she does lamb they thought March. So maybe I'll think about Feb.....

Nigella,
I use to raise wool sheep but didn't start lambing until March because we would get into the single digits and below zero sometimes. Southern Ohio weather is unpredictable. What we did was crutch the ewe (shearing around the little girl area and around the tail and back legs and udder). This way the ewe would stay warm and clean and the lamb would be able to nurse without wool tags in the way. When we would get a break in the weather then we would finish shearing. But you have to do what works for you and your area.
