My kids are still young enough (6, 8, and 10) for me to "trick" them into thinking they're doing a game, when it's really housework :)

They love to play "Round Robin" which is where I give them an assignment, such as picking up the living room, or vacuuming the bedrooms, or cleaning all the bathroom counters, you get the idea; then I set the timer for 5 minutes and they race to get it done. When the timer goes off they come back to the kitchen for a new assignment. If the first one isn't done, someone else moves on to it. The last "round" is the "Speed round" which is their favorite--I give them items from the kitchen that need to be put away in other rooms (the kitchen tends to be a dumping-ground for things), they run to put the item away, and back to get another one. It gets a little silly, but when the 5 min is up, a LOT of housework has been done! And they have had fun! Yay!

Sheila,
I wanted to POP back over here, and say THANK YOU! It really works! What used to take over an hour, due to whining and short attention spans, now takes less than 20 min! The chore chart has been full of stars since the day I read your post and implemented this game.

Two days ago, my oldest DD asked if I could get the dishes done before they finished the living room and play room. My DH chuckled the whole time. We had baked three loaves of bread, a huge pot of chili, and a blueberry pie that morning...the kids beat me! (But only by a minute). Thank you so much for this post. It is so great to help focus the kids so the work doesn't drag on and on. Plus, its fun to add a bit of healthy competition to the every day *have to's*

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.

My little one is a bit young to do chores yet but she is already helping me, especially after grocery shopping! One thing I feel is really important is I don't complain about or be negative about chores, outside or in the house. Otherwise it seems like more work and as long as I stay positive about it I am hoping my kids will get the attitude too. No job to big, no job to small we can do them all and all with a smile :) good luck!
