I am sure on here somewhere there is a recipe for homemade dishsoap. I usually use Biokleen or Seventh Generation but live in the middle of nowhere so have to have it shipped to me. I am about out... and my box of stuff won't be here until Tuesday. If anyone has a great recipe for homemade I would love to try it! Keep in mind I have little resources to purchase anything though! Just a Safeway and it is LITTLE! Thanks! |

Hi Kristi! I make a homemade dish soap, here is the recipe.I also posted a similiar homemade laundry detergent recipe a few days ago,I hope this helps!
40 ounces water 16 ounces castille bar or castille liquid soap 4 ounces liquid glycerin 1 ounce rosemary essential oil 1 ounce sweet orange or lemon essential oil Combine the water and grated soap in the top of a double boiler, gently heat unti soap has melted and liquid is clear and runny, add the glycerin then the essential oils, blend well and pour into containers, makes about forty ounces.

I made some dishsoap a while back and was disappointed. Well, what I didn't realize is that you really need to get it to the 'rope phase'. You will melt the soap and keep stirring it until it acts like smooth marshmallow cream and is rope-y. I took the funky batch I had (it looked like wet cottage cheese) and re-heated it until it reached that phase, kept adding small amounts of water until it reached the consistency I wanted, then let it cool. Now it's great!
Look into 'hand-milling' soap, too. This is something I just got into. It is similar to the above, but you are making a solid bar and not a liquid. Really cool, and doesn't involve lye :0D

Kathryn, thank you for the "recipe". Going to give it a try. Have been using the Seventh Generation too, but if I can make my own stuff - that all the better. I make my own laundry soap and cleaners, so this will be great to add to my collection and share with DIL's. Think I'll make some up for friends to try as well. Has to be more cost effective than buying the stuff at the health food store as I usually do. Thanks again. |

So far, I have not been happy with any that I have made. I will try this recipe. I keep getting those "soap scum" spots and icky residue on my dishes. You can scrape lines into it with your fingernails....ick.... I use if for hand soap though.. :) ..
Today is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.

Hi Krystle, Sorry I didn't see this question sooner, yes, you could certainly omit the glycerin,I sometimes add glycerin because it helps "seal" moisture in your skin and can sometimes balance out the drying effects of the soap on your hands so it's purely for comfort and will not affect the effectiveness of the dish soap.

I know this may sound odd but in my house my husband throws away the shampoo bottles even if there is a small amount of it left in the bottom so I get them out of the bathroom trash can add a bit of water & have a dishwashing soap that smell nice...plus its a way to get ever last drop of the soap that would be in the trash if I didn't get it....I don't ever buy the type with conditioner in it but I don't think that would be a good thing for dishes I think it would leave a coating on the dishes even if you rinsed well......Michele'
