I recently switched to homemade detergent consisting of equal parts borax, baking soda and then a few TBSP of citric acid. I am also using vingar in the rinse agent dispenser.
My issue is that when using commercial detergent I could run my loads on "light wash" and never had to use the extended cycle or temp boost. (unless it was an extrodinarly dirty load). Now, I seem to need to use both inorder for a majority of the dishes to get clean and I still have dishes that are dirty.
Anyone encouter this? Perhaps a different recipe for detergent is out there....?

I have been having my dishes come out cloudy. They are clean, but don't have that crystal clear shine. I hope someone has a good answer for you. I know I need one too!

Danielle- are you putting any sort of soap into the mix at all? You might try adding just a little soap, but I don't have an automatic washer so I am not sure.
Angie- If your dishes are coming out cloudy- are you using the Citric Acid? I remember a bunch of ladies were having the same problem and then we realized you have to have the citric acid in there.

| When I had my dishwasher repaired the repairman said if you want clean dishes you HAVE to use hot water and a detergent with phosphates which are now banned here in WA. JoAnn |

The recipe I had called for 1/4 cup citric acid and my dishes still come out cloudy. My glasses are all spotted and anything plastic has a residue on it. I hate using the storebought stuff, but it's that or handwashing I guess, if I want them really clean. I'm really disappointed too...I so wanted it to work.  |

I found (part of) the answer -I added some Boraxo hand soap to my dispenser cup along with the above-mentioned deterent and it worked well. All but one bowl was clean on the "normal" cycle I use and there was less cloudyness. I am going to up my citric acid next time to see if that doesn the trick.

I have tried several handmade dishwasher detergents and haven't found one yet that I'm happy with. This includes adding citric acid, borax, washing soda, vinegar, even added a couple of drops of Joy or Dawn to the dishwasher a few times. A couple of recipes seemed to work okay the first couple of uses, then it seemed the dishes just weren't getting very clean. So I've decided this is the one thing I'll continue to buy, and make everything else! lol!
