I've decided to only spend my money on 1 Magazine subscription (other than Mary Jane's). My choices are:
Mother Earth News? I have issue 1-100 already, but it seems the magazine took a wrong turn after issue 100....you can't build a yurt for $25.00 anymore...and they cater to "back-to-the-landers" that have way more money than me!
then there is, Countryside and Small Stock Journal...which I absolutely adore, but articles get kinda repetitive and bland...
and finally Backwoods Home Magazine. I love the articles but that magazine has too many guns and too many beefs about politics.
So what do I do?

Hey Debbie - I was given a copy of Urban Farm and was pretty impressed, it's from Hobby Farms and I felt like there was a lot of substance to it. I feel the same way you do about the magazines you listed - like them all, but not sure if I want to subscribe. I haven't been able to afford any magazine subscriptions this year, even had to let my MJF lapse till the budget gets better, so when I do re-subscribe I'm going to be very choosy.

I'm with Amy Grace. I like the Hobby Farms publishings. I like Hobby Farm Home and Hobby Farm, in general. I, too, found Mother Earth news a little too "too" for my liking.

Funny that is just what I was going to say too. Hobby Farm Home! I really love that book. I like Grit too. I have read all the other ones, but I do find much repetion in alot of them. I love MJ and always get that one. It has so many different things in it. That is what a like a variety.The Backwoods Home one is too far out there for me. I like articles and info not just opinions you know?

I'm with Amy Grace and Jonni,
I just picked up my first copy of Hobby Farms. I like it a lot.
The Urban Farm mag was sealed in plastic so I couldn't peruse it -- but it looked good too.
Let us know what you decide,

So funny that HObby Farms is the one that came to my mind, too. MEN is so mainstream these days and at all the libraries for easy borrowing. Our library just got MJF, too, thank goodness because I couldn't subscribe this year, either. I sure get my tax dollars worth at the library though!
Enjoy! I have read Grit, too, but I thought Hobby Farms was "prettier."

I get a email from backwoods home and that is just enough, a little goes a long way. I do like Urban farms, Mothe Earth News just runs mostly the same articles, I really like Countryside right now. So many choices...

I like all of those magazines. I do subscribe to Countryside. Used to get the Dairy Goat Journal. And I love Hobby Farms. MEN talks alot about things I mostly already know. Like canning and gardening. So I don't get it. But Hobby Farms usually has articles about the animals I have.

I forgot about Grit, Mary Jane. I like that one, too, though I am not a regular subscriber. If I had my druthers...I would subscribe to Country Living UK Edition (the British Country Living). It's NOTHING like our Country Living. It's actually about living in the country as opposed to decorating like you live in the country ;) A subscription runs about $75.00, though!

Shoot, I live in the country and my house never even came close to looking like any of those houses in Country Living. I wish! Matbe someday. Mine is more eclectic cottage with leather couches thrown in. I used to get that magazine but now it seems like it's all ads. I also love Southern Living. They have some of the best recipes.

DO you have a library nearby? Do they carry any of these magazines? Ours carries mother earth news and the book store has it. For the price of a cup of tea I'll read through the magazines that way. Oh they get me other ways and they know it, but those are some options. Do any of your friends like the same magazines? Can you both subscribe to different ones and share?
I enjoy these also, but many time find only one or two articles that I really want to read (hence the bookstore).

Mine, either, Kris. That's one of the main reasons I stopped taking Country Living: the ads. It seemed like that's all there was!
I like to joke that our little 1920's cottage is put together with sticks and duct tape. But, it's ours, and room by room, we're getting it done.
I haven't gotten Southern Living in a while, either. I go through spurts where I go back to something. Right now, though, as busy as I am with Violet and work, I'm still backed up on Cooking Light issues from July!!!! Good thing recipes never go out of date!

I forgot about the UK Country Living, I like that one too. I found an old copy of the US Country Living and it reminded me why I used to like it and why I keep thinking I still do, even though there is absolutely nothing relevant in it anymore - although I do like the Antique/What is it/What is it worth part - you never know. Every once in a while I splurge and buy the UK edition though

Thanks for all the input. The closest library to me is 30 miles round trip, so maybe I can look to see if they carry Hobby Farm. (Sounds like a handsdown favorite from all the posts). It's hard to be in a $ situation that makes a person have to cut corners and drop subscriptions. I've decided against Backwoods Home and MEN (the magazine, not the gender...lol). My subscription of Countryside & Small Stock Journal runs out in 2012, so I'll wait to renew anything then.
