There were so many suggestions on the other threads but I don't know which would be appropriate for a very bright, very energetic 4 year old boy. (my nephew)
He just saw the new car's movie and loved it, if that helps.

Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems
The Hallo-weiner by Dav Pilkey
Dog Breath by Dav Pilkey
KatKong or Dogzilla by Dav Pilkey
All of the Captain Underpants "graphic novels" by Dav Pilkey
No David!, David Goes to School, David Gets in Trouble all by David Shannon
This is all I can think of at the moment, but all of these should appeal to a 4 year old, bright and lively boy. Especially the David Shannon and Dav Pilkey books...anything by those two authors are usually adored by little boys!!
This is one of my favorite areas of reading and discussion....children's literature!!

I have to second the votes for Jamberry and the "David" books - my little guy LOVES them. Also, he REALLY likes Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel - I think that's what it's called. Anyway, it's an oldie about a steam shovel named MaryAnn that's good. What a fun age! He also likes "My Many Colored Days." Others that are favorites? ANYTHING about farm equipment and farm animals and farming. There are some good ones out there - too bad he's napping in by the bookcase or I'd go and check! Later....

Our Favorites when the boys were that age are by Sandra Boynton, I love the book "Belly Button" and "Barnyard Dance". Some of her books have music CD's . One song that really makes the boys laugh is "Fifteen animals" it's on the album Philadelphia chickens.
I really like animals. I like them alot. Fifteen animals is what I've got . I've got fifteen animals , they're friendly and tame, And I 've given each one a special name; I 've got a cat named Bob, and a dog named Bob and two fish called Bob and Bob. THen there's Bob , my hamster, and Bob my horse and my piglet know as Bob , of course.
Yeah, I really like animals , I like them a lot. Fifteen animals is what I've got.
I've got fifteen animals they're friendly and tame and I've given each on a special name: Well there's my Rabbit Bob, and his bunny wife , Bob and their kids, Bob, Bob and Bob There's Bob the mouse and Bob the Bird and my turtle, SImon James ALexander Ragsdale III.

I love, love, love Dav Pilkey. I really believe that my 11 year old son is an avid reader today because of being introduced to the Capt. Underpants series in grade school. They can engage the toughest cases in reading. I personally think that they are directed at a little older target audience than a 4 year old, but that's just my opinion. I think that the Ricky Ricotta books are a little more on target for your nephew. Dav Pilkey has a great website at pilkey.com with lots of activities and sample pages from his books. I also would check with a child's parents before buying because some people raise their eyebrows at them.
I also love Brown Bear, Brown Bear or anything else by Bill Martin Jr., The Very Hungry Caterpillar or anything else by Eric Carle, anything by Shel Silverstein-especially The Giving Tree, Lyle Lyle Crocodile by Bernard Waber, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, and Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion.
There are so many great books out there. An auntie could go broke keeping her nephew in books!

| Check out TRACTION MAN by Mini Grey -- a fabulous book about a boy and his action figure and the humiliation that comes when granny knits Traction Man an "all in one knitted green romper and matching bonnet". The knitter in me cracked up at Granny's home decor which includes a framed photo of a prize-winning sock. My kids (4 1/2 and 18 months) LOVE Traction Man. |

Thank you for all the suggestions. Next month is his birthday and I'm trying to get some ideas on what to get him.
I love to read and I like to encourage children to get into books. So I'm going to print out everyone's suggestions and check them out.

For some reason I can't get my review of this to come up but it is a book called, It's Springtime in My Backyard by Kathy Mazur - give it a shot by looking at www.BookPleasures.com and look under reviewer, Katherine Turcotte, you will find it there. Very nice book about ducks in a child's yard in the springtime - beautiful photos and also it comes with a CD that the author's daughter reads the book on - this makes it twice as nice!

At 4 my son loved & even memorized parts of:
The Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, Grasshopper on the Road, Mouse Soup, Mouse Tales, Owl at Home all by Arnold Lobel
The Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman
Margaret Wise Brown's The Little Fur Child

I have 3 boys and homeschool. Here are my must haves:
Thornton Burgess - animals,nature
Holling C. Holling - very inventive, adventurous geography
Arthur Ransome - wholesome, English children in the country
All time favorite: James Herriott's Treasury for Children - the best and most beautiful animal stories (and true!)
A little older, but MUST HAVE: V. M. Hillyer (A Child's History of the World; A Child's Geography of the World)
Ernest Thompson Seton - animals, Cowboys and Indians |
