I never realized how much I use my thumbs and how much they are needed til I almost cut my left one off last night. I was sharpening my big knife to get ready to cut up meat for dog food and the knife slipped off the sharpener and sliced my left thumb. I immediately made a fist and held it up. I could not look. I hate getting cut. So I called my daughter. She said she'd send her husband to come help. I was crying and almost hysterical. He came as fast as he could. He looked at it and said we were going to the ER. I said nope, that's $250 right away. So we have an after hour clinic in Lafayette. He called and said we were coming in. They had my chart ready. The nurse said it looks like I was there not too long ago with a cut infected finger. I said yes, but now it's my thumb. And doing the very same thing except I had been cutting meat then.

They took me right back. My hand was stuck together from holding it closed for so long. The blood had dried. The nurse fixed a bowl of soapy water and I stuck my hand in. Then I looked. It was huge. The nurse asked if my thumb was normally that big. Hah! It was huge. SO the doctor came and looked. It needed stitches. I almost passed out. It was numb already but I sure felt those shots. It took 6 stitches. I have to go back in 2 weeks.

So this morning I was able to do all my animal chores. Even haul buckets of water. But I could not milk the goats with both hands. I could only do one teat at a time with my right hand. But I did it. It took twice as long though. I had put a plastic bag over my hand before I did all this.

My thumb is wrapped up really good. It's still numb though. I hope it doesn't get infected. They didn't give me any antibiotics. I am ok with that as I have gotten yeast infections the few times I have taken them. I am just a little worried about the numbness. I hope it doesn't have to be taken off.

But anyway, I just got to thinking how very important that little apendage is. Without it I cannot grasp anything. It was hard to do a ponytail. I can't pick anything up with my left hand. God is truely amazing how He made the human body to work just right. But please pray it doesn't get infected. Thanks. Sorry this is so long.

Kris,
I hope your thumb doesn't get infected. Thank goodness it wasn't worse. It's amazing the things we take for granted.

Well, I'm just glad you didn't cut it plumb off! Our friend did that New Year's eve--cut the tip of her thumb right off cutting lemons. Thank goodness it wasn't worse!!!

Kris,
You never know how much you use something until you can't anymore! I almost cut off my thumb on the left hand on the last piece of wallpaper I was hanging on a job. I finished the job only to use all the money I made paying for the stitches! Do you have a current tetanis shot? I am sure they checked. I have started wearing rubber gloves when sharpening my knives. That way they don't slip! I hope you heal fast!

I am so sorry to hear you hurt yourself. It is probably numb because you cut through nerves. Truthfully I think you should be thankful right now it is numb! It would probably be quite painful! I hope no infections set in and that you heal up very quickly. We just don't realize how much we use our thumbs, until we can't!

Yes, they gave me a tetatun shot. In my left arm. I didn't get one the last time I went. SO I thought maybe I should. as much as I get hurt anymore around here. I called awhile ago about the numbness and they said it should be numb til tomorrow. So I guess that's normal. Now I am worried about falling on the icy snow we still have tons of out there. At least my thumb is nice and warm.

Diane, I am beginning to wonder about my "free" dog food. I have been to the doctor twice so far cutting up this free meat. It's not so free anymore. Thanks for all the good thoughts. I guess I should be thankful for the numbness. I have whacked it a few times already and that does hurt.

I'm trying, Alee. I had help today. And will the rest of the week. My granddaughter will be here. She's a good little helper. I just wish she could milk the goats! She tries but I would have to feed them 10 pounds of grain.

Kris - praying for quick healing without infection...the numbness should go away and probably means that a tiny nerve was cut but it should heal...be sure to keep it clean and dry and to eat plenty of protein so you body can heal it as fast as it can. It was good that you got the stitches which will help it close and heal. Maybe you should consider having the butcher slice up your meat for you LOL

Oh my goodness Kris, Bless your heart! Please be more carefull - glad you got the tetnus shot, that arm probably is sore too!
I have very dull knives, think I'll keep them that way! I have enough problems with my fingers without cutting them. You are in my prayers girl friend.
Sherrye, I had my right thumb fused, and I'm very happy with that! Can do anything I want to, except bend it! I also had a joint replacement on my ring finger right hand, it's good too! I'd do it again if necessary, it sure beats the pain I was in all the time!
Kris, please, please be careful and don't be out there walking on the ice - we are supposed to get rain tomorrow, maybe it will melt all the ice
Big hugs, Ruth

I was able to milk this morning with both hands!! I didn't try it with Sandy but when I was halfway done with Abby I tried and I could. It didn't hurt at all. I am so glad. It is still all wrapped up. I'm afraid to take it off to look at it. It guess I should though. Let it breath a little. I've never had stitches myself and it's been years since my daughter had any. I just remember that I am not supposed to get them wet. But should I unwrap the gauze yet or wait a little longer?

We are supposed to have rain all day tomorrow. There is just a little bit of snow hanging on in some places. It will be warm today so hopefully it will all be melted by tomorrow. I have heard that if there is still snow on the ground one week after it snowed that we will get more snow.

Sherrye, you should go ahead and get your thumb done. Like Ruth said, it will help you alot.

Starletta, it's still numb this morning but not as much. I hope it's not going to stay this way. Thanks for the prayers.
