Brody is at the Rainbow Bridge. My gentle giant went swiftly to sleep in my arms this afternoon. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. Roxie does not understand.
Brody was a great dane - almost 10 years old which is old for their breed. Roxie is a 5 year old cockapoo...they were both rescues and have lived together in our home for two years (Roxie came a year earlier when my other dane died)..it was very difficult taking him to the vet for this-he was eager to go for a ride!
this hurts.

I am so sorry for your loss - it is never easy to have one of our dear one's pass. You had some great times I am sure and during this time please remember how blessed you where to have those times. I have recently lost a furry four legged that has been here for 14 years and I understand how your heart is feeling now but give yourself time and those great days will come to your heart and you will remember how blessed your where to have that sweet one in your life. I place you in my prayers and wished I could be there to give you a long hug.

| Just wanted to give a big cyber hug to you and Roxie. I only 'knew' one Great Dane in my lifetime but he, too, was a sweet guy. I think Mother Nature has it a wee bit messed up - the big breeds have too short of a time on earth for us to love'em. It's not fair. Give Roxie some extra TLC and kisses for us to let her know that we understand her loss too. |

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that had been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all our special friends
so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends
are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor:
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent; His body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group,
flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Rescuer's Bridge I
Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined.
All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before.
But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and
started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.
It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging.
The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often.
He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness.
Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again.
As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him.
He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be.
But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized,
but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge.
With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself,
also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge.
And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed
and asked one of the animals that had been there for awhile to explain it to him.
"You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding.
He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence.
Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge.
"The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?"
As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted.
Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person, and among the older animals,
a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again,
just as they were in the prime of life.
"Watch, and see," said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and
bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears.
The newly restored animals fell into line and followed her towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together.
"What happened?"
"That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of her work.
They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes.
When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue.
They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth across The Rainbow Bridge."
"I think I like rescuers", said the first animal."So does GOD", was the reply.

wow- karrieann, i had never seen the rescuer version....
brody was approx 2.5 years old when he was rescued from a cage of frozen excrement that was about 6 inches deep. i have seen the photos of him at that time and they are horrid. he lived with a wonderful family for about 5 years, then they basically gave him to us when i missed my dane, Trinity, after her passing. (she had died when i was out of town and hubby was with her). we had to give brody back for a few months when we thought we were moving somewhere he couldn't go--he developed behaviors-aggression--toward the other tons of dogs at their house (he was trying to regain his Alpha spot!)--when he came back to us he was just full of joy!
he has aged terribly tho in the past 6 months..and change with my hubby leaving, our divorce, me gone all of the time at work where hubby had been home all day....he developed problems with his bowels and had to immediately go out to poo after eating; started getting into anything and everything he could get his mouth on and ate some of the soaps i got in my secret sister gift as well as the button wreath i had started for the swap.....yesterday, he ripped open a 4# bag of cat food and ate approx 2# and then promptly poo'd it out in the living room. (prior to his rescue i think he must have been left to starve.....)at our house, every morning he had his full bowl of food!
he was a love bug; graceful galloot! still ran just a few days ago...but he was starting to really be a challenge--i feel horrible in my heart that a dog who visbly did not look ill was suffering basically from old age...danes aren't expected to live much longer than 8-10 years and he was there...i am trying to convince myself that i gave him dignity and kept him from pain.he knew he was loved.

The pain of losing a beloved pet it hard to take but worth it for all the wonderful companionship they have shared with us, that gives us the incentive to love again.

Well now you did it! I've got tears streaming down my face. Bur I'm writing to thank you.
I've read the Rainbow Bridge about pets meeting those they love on the other side. Over the years we've had quite a few rescued pets who lived out the rest of their lives with us. We can't help them all but I like this version of hope. I'll pass it on to my pet loving friends.

I am so sorry you lost your pet. One of our older dogs passed, and our other dog Freckles kept going to the closet looking for him, that was the hardest part. Wishing you peace, Carol

Margo, I am so sorry for your loss. I have been on that path all to many times myself. Am dealing with my sweet Jackie and glaucoma and blindness issues. She is a 10 yo Beagle. Was at the vet today and the specialist tomorrow. I'm getting freaked out over everything and just cry thinking too much. We love our animals like our children so it is normal to have broken hearts. Bless you and know you are in my prayers.

Prayers and hugs to you at this difficult time. These blessed souls bring us such comfort when they share our lives and I congratulate you on being able to let him go with his dignity and with as little suffering as possible. It is so hard to do. It must be a lonely time for you with the changes in your life that you described. Your farmgirls are here for you.

gals....i truly appreciate your thoughts and hugs and prayers...it was soooooooooooooooo lonely last nite getting into bed; he would circle circle circle around and plop down behind me right against my back since hubby is gone....my lil roxie hasn't really missed him yet -today will be the test while i'm here at work....and, with the recent divorce etc ....well; what doesn't kill me will make me stronger and i am grateful for the wonderful time i had with him in my life! he deserved every ounce of the dignity he kept and the regal way he handled it.....he'll never be forgotten!

So sorry, Margo...
I know only too well the marks these fur friends leave on our hearts and minds when they leave this earth. I had to make the decision to put my 14 year old Husky, Lily to sleep a few years ago and I'm still not over it.
After working in shelters and rescues for some years, there are some friends I've had to say goodbye to, much too early. And, it really is for the best when they are in pain. I only wish someone could make these sorts of decisions for us when it's our time.
Sadly, my mother had to make this very decision on the 23rd of December for her 12 year old Newfie mix, Lizzie. Terrible time of year to lose a friend, for sure.

I just lost my last Dane in July, A harlequin named Willow (she was 13! do you believe it?)
I have other dogs, but they are not the same. My heart aches for another Dane, there is just nothing like one.
My BIL got me some Dane salt & pepper shakers for Christmas, & I got teary eyed even looking at those!
