I often keep cotton yarn in a travel bag with knitting needles to have a simple project to fill time while I wait in doctor's offices or while occupying my time while traveling. They soon start to stack up and I often use these round dishcloths to cover jars.
I put some pictures on my blog. What do you do with your surplus knitted dishcloths?

Crochet a chain and thread it through the edges to make a soap sack.
I make the diagonal squares and always keep them on a shelf in a decorative box to give as mini gifts for those who do a small favor. |

Brenda, I can use up some of the dishcloths that I make...I also use some for facecloths for the bathroom...put in a basket by the sink. I am 2 1/2 hrs from KC.
Rosemary, cute idea, I will have to give that a try.

what a darling idea--- i am going to borrow your recipe and the cloth topper idea- i have some giftees who are hard to shop for-these will be great! thanx for sharing!--- and i love the soap holder idea as well! my fisrt hubby's gramma used to make them-we miss them!!!!

After reading this I crocheted a round dishcloth, but it was larger than I expected. So....I wrapped the half pint jar from the bottom, tied it with a ribbon, and added a bow. Thanks for the tip. It made wonderful "wrapping paper" for giving a jar of jelly this year.

I also knit square dishclothes and they are even easier to knit in a no-think situation. I have taken ribbon and wove around the edges to make little sacks to put gifts in or for grab bag type drawings. I have also woven a ribbon or a matching crocheted chain around three of the sides and then put a draw string (ribbon or chained matching yarn) around the open end about 1 1/2 inch from the top and put in fresh herbs to hang and dry. They look pretty hanging on a hook in the kitchen and when I am finished drying and used the herb...just remove the strings and you have 2 dishcloths. I really think knitting little square or rectangular dishcloths out of cotton yarn helps to improve your knitting and practice using different stitches or patterns.
