I thought it would be alot of fun to share what our first animal was when we were growing up. My very first animal to call my own was my two rabbits oreo and cocoa. I got them when I was 10 years old and I was so excited! Of course we had a dog first but I shared it with two older brothers and one younger sister.
It was different with these two bunnies because I had to get up everyday and feed them, water them, clean out there cages, etc all by my self.
So what was your very first animal?
Hugs,
Hannah

Fun idea! My first animal was an orphan lamb. I was about 4 years old at the time. My dad was visiting at the local coffee shop while I was in Sunday School and Mom was home with my baby brother. A farmer friend said one of his sheep wouldn't feed her baby and it was about to die. Dad came to get me and told me to look in the back seat. There on the floor was the tiny limp baby lamb. I dived over the seat and petted it all the way home. When we got there mom filled up a baby bottle for her. She slept in a box by the oil heater that night. I named her Rosie, because of her cute pink nose and insisted she wear a red dog collar. She grew up stong and healthy. I have a tied comfortere with her wool and two boxes of wool that were cleaned but not processed. She produced two lambs but then died from eating nightshade. I'll never forget her. Thanks for bringing back such a good memory. You sure have a great talent for encouraging happy thoughts!

Very neat idea! I remember when I was really young we had goats and chickens and horses and such. But my first pet was a medium sized stray dog. My Dad brought her home and we instantly connected. I named her Peaches. She was light colored and had a strip down her back the color of a peach. I remember getting ready for school one day and my older brother coming in to tell me Peaches had been run over. I didn't believe him at first, thinking he was just being mean like older brothers will do. But I went outside and seen my Mom standing by her body talking to the person who had run over her. I remember crying all morning thinking how unfair it was for her to go out that way. That was the most miserable day of school.

Just a few years ago we had a couple of barn cats that we named Peaches & Cream because 1)of their peachy and creamy coloring and 2) in remembrance of Peaches. I'll continue to use her name for those special peachy animals. :)

I'll never forget my first pet. She was a mutt named Misty. I think she chose us instead of us choosing her. She was a true country dog, loved to hunt rabbits and knew how to flip a snake over on its back. She was the leader of the other dogs in the neighborhood. She could also run very fast and liked to race cars up the road. She died when I was twelve. I was so sad. She was a good dog.

My first pet was a dog named Boots. Her and I use to roam the farm together. I can't imagine letting a child of 3 or 4 run all day out in the fields with just a dog for company but I survived. The sad thing is I barely remember her. She was black and white, which might be why I'm so strongly drawn to animals of that color. We hadn't seen her in days and thought she'd run off. Don't know what caused us to look in the doghouse but there she was. Shortly after she died we got a german shepherd named Tracey B that I absolutely adored. I think we got her when I was about 6 or 7. My stepfather was a lions club member and we were a puppy holding site for dogs going to the Leader Dog program. Someone wanted to donate a litter of 13 pups but only if we'd take the mother too, so my stepfather said we'd keep the mother (Tracey B). Unfortunately she died within a year or two. The previous owner had a choke collar on her and it got caught on the kennel fence when she was jumping up and she strangled herself. It was many years before I allowed myself to get close to a dog again.

My first animal that was my very own was a Gerbil named June. I got her because I was going to bring home the Science class snake and since my parents where scared to death of snakes I settled for getting the Gerbil... She lived for six years - see at a very early age I managed to keep animals way past their life expectance... At that same time I brought home one of the eggs that did not hatch - teacher thought surely I would drop it on the way home. I kept it in a sweater all day and got it home and made a place for it to hatch. My parents did not think it would hatch but soon EGGIE was following me everywhere. After that my parents kept very close eye on what I brought home...

I am thinking my first real pet was a guinea pig. I had several as a young child. I even had a piar of them I was playing with around 1976 or 1977 when a tornadoe hit. My mom made me leave them in my play craddle in my bedroom. I was screaming to just take them with, she wouldnt let me and I cried the whole time we were downstairs. Then when I got upstairs, they were fine! I was so happy! They were the best!

when i was about 4 my parents got me my first dog his name was rover-he was a beautiful collie. he had a white spot on his butt that i kept poking so they figured that was the one i wanted-he lived till i was close to 18. he was a very faithful loyal and protective dog. it is kinda funny because my first child has a blondish white spot on the back of his head-i poke it sometimes and tell him i picked him because he was special like my first dog!

My first pet was a goldfish named Blackie. Blackie jumped out of his bowl and landed in my mom's hot tea on the coffee table one day. Amazingly he survived that adventure! When I was 8 I got a yellow Canary for my birthday. His name was "Nicky Pippy Polkadot Bulldoggy Scratch Bubbles" but most of the time we just called him Pippy. (I came up with the name all by myself but Nicky was after a bird my mom had as a girls.) Pippy managed to squeeze out of his cage the day we brought him home. It was a bamboo pagoda style cage and the roof was missing from one of the tiers. He flew way up into the clerestory windows. My dad and I put a perch on the end of a long stick and tied a piece of lettuce on the perch. Pippy hopped on and came right back down. He kept getting out of the cage but he was very finger friendly and within a few weeks he would come to our head or shoulders if you just tapped the spot with your finger. Eventually my parents let him stay out of the cage all the time. He would go back in to eat or sleep but he had free range in the house. All of the neighbor kids were trained to close the doors. Our milkman would let himself in on Thursdays to put our order in the fridge while my mom was at work. He would feed him a piece of lettuce or another treat to distract him so he could go back out the front door without Pippy landing on his shoulder. Pippy's favorite treats were powdered sugar, homemade bread crust and icecream which he would nibble from a spoon. He also used sit on the scroll of my violin and sing while I practiced after school. He lived to be 11 years old.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

My first "personal" pet was a black rabbit named Cuddles. The only problem was that she wasn't particularly cuddly. LOL!

My first pet was a cat named 'Tippy'. All black and white with a white tip on the end of her tail. She had kittens in our extra closet (probably on the lovely HOT PINK shag carpeting!!!). I don't know what happened to Tippy, but I do remember that I tried to pet her babies one day and she scratched me. Well, I learned my lesson! Never mess with a mama's babies!

My first animal was a black and white cat that we thought was a boy, so I named him Buddy. I think we mixed up the two black and white ones in the litter and he turned out to be a girl! She was the best cat but left us when we moved from the country to town. My next pet that was soley mine was a gerbil that was born deformed. He was missing two feet but still got around great. He was very tame and sweet but only lived about a year. I think he had some medical problems.

I never had a pet when I was young. I got my pooch when I was 56. We (my son and I) were taking care of my mother's yard while she was in the hospital. A pickup drove by and this little puppy fell out. We didn't really want a pet, but the neighbor had mean dogs and I knew she would be dog food if we left her there. We kept her for three days and then decided to take her to the pound. After that short time that we had her, we missed her so much we went to the pound to get her back. The people at the pound couldn't find her, but knew that she hadn't been adopted out. We found her at the local PetSmart charming all the people. The folks at PetSmart had named her Penny and it just stuck. She is now 12 years of age and getting to be a little slow in her movements, but she is a love nonetheless. I wouldn't trade her for the world.

Oh, this did take me back in memory lane. My first pet was parakeet named "Tweetie" of all things. LOL. I was so happy training this blue feathered bird to sit on my finger and walk up a ladder for birds and sit on my shoulder as I walked around the house. He was a jewel. Then I went to 1 week summer camp and I left his care with my father. When I got home my dad told me he had some bad news that "Tweetie" was gone. He swore he was taking care of him making sure he had seed and fresh water but my dad was not very good at taking care of animals. What he thought were seeds were just the husks of the seeds in the dish. It's funny now and we laughed about it for years. The good thing was he surprised me with another parakeet. A yellow one this time. I named him "Baby" and started training him. He lived for 10 years. I think that's where I got my love for birds. We feed about 200 wild birds a day in the winter here. Among those are chickadees( my favorites), redpolls, gray jays, magpies, grosbeaks, woodpeckers and an occasional raven. Love those birds.!!

My first pet was a collie pup named Lancelot. He died of distemper before I was old enough to remember him. My first that I can remember was an Irish terrier named Lady. She was long-suffering as I dressed her up, made her play house, etc. I have no idea what happened to her, except that she "disappeared" after having a litter of boxer/terrier mix puppies. My parents weren't much into taking care of pets as members of the family as we do today. That was the early '50s and they were country folks who didn't put much thought or $$ into their dogs.

My first animal was a German Shepard named "Shep". lol (wonder where that name came from) Santa brought her to me for Christmas when I was 3. I remember putting diapers on her so she wouldn't mess up the house. She played hide and seek with me and I couldn't figure out why she would always find me. We moved to a house in the country and mama says she ran away. I was heart broken, I loved her so much.
