I just put 2 ads on Craigslist for our horse and all 27 of our chickens. Then the farm will be empty, except for our dog. We have been here for 30 years and have ALWAYS had some kind of farm animal here at some point. We've had Guineas, Chickens, Sheep, Horses & Ponies, Rabbits, Cows, Goats, Pigs, many dogs and a few cats.
We made a decision a few weeks ago, that we are gonna start fresh next spring and we will never have any animals here again that can't be used for food. (except the dog)We'll spend the winter building new fences, build a greenhouse and make repairs to our existing sheds and outbuildings and start all over again. We're aiming to get three calves, (1 Jersey heifer,1 steer and 1 bull), 2 piglets, 50 more Chickens, and a Rabbit Doe and Buck. It does make me kinda sad to spend all winter without any livestock, but all the money we'll save on feed and hay will be put into our future instead.
Here's to the future!

Hi Debbie - is does sound like that would be a sad thing for you but here's another bright side thought - you won't have to go out in cold bitter weather to tend any animals this winter.

That sounds like a great plan to me! I do not enjoy the winter feeding part. It looks like you have made a good descision for both you and your husband. Sometimes you just have to do that. And let the land rest some. So take a break and enjoy your free time. You won't have much next spring!

I would love to raise some chickens on our place but have no idea about how to even go about it. Are there books? Is there a website with pictures? Is there a Chicken Raising for Dummies???

Mary Beth...there are a million books about raising ANY kind of animals. Check one of them out at your local library.

I was thinking that DH and I could actually travel this winter without finding someone to come tend to our livestock!
WHAT A CONCEPT!!!!!!
