People keep abandoning cats on our road. We have taken in so many cats and found homes for most, but these last two are hard to give up. We have kept them as indoor/outdoor cats for a couple of years now, but now with the bad weather and needing to get their shots updated...rabies tags etc....we are up against a wall of realistically what we can afford to care for and have to find them places at a shelter. We really are sad to have to "abandon" them, but bills are piling up and we can't afford to care for any more animals 
Even though it is a no kill shelter and they all have a large room to "hang-out" in...I won't know their fates and I've come to be fond of them. Wish me luck getting them to the shelter Saturday

Oh Annika, I am so sorry! How I wish we had a no kill shelter here but we don't. I don't know how in the world people can abandoned any animal. Tis a sad world we live in.
But I am so greatful for people like you who take in those animals and find them good homes. You are a blessing! I will pray extra hard that those two cats find very good, loving homes and that they would live long happy lives!

I can relate to being forced to taking a cat to a shelter. My calico simply did not bode well with a multi cat household and would defecate and urinate all over. We tried virtually everything, spent loads of money, and after almost four years of this we thought it would be more humane to take her to a shelter in hopes that she'd go to a one cat household.
I typed up a 'letter' explaining her personality, age, her quirks, her loving nature, and of course the fact that she really likes to be by herself. Because I couldn't do it, I had my DH take her and leave this letter with the shelter to have them give to her new owner. Whether they did or not, we'll never know.
To add insult to injury - I have to drive by the shelter when I go to work. The first several months were very hard. I will not admit this to my DH but I came very close a few times to going in to see how she was, or she was even there.
My daughter and I will worry forever about her and we miss her so very much. We try to console ourselves in thinking that she went to a little old lady who would love her.
If I had the money I'd surely give it to you as I know this must be hard. And really, there's no 'rule' that says that you must vaccinate them, etc. Yes they'll be at risk but then they'll still be with you and your loving home.
You'll be in my thoughts on Saturday and please let us know how it went. |

I do have to say though girls, is that without Animal shelters there would be alot of animals the would starve to death,die ect. They really are a blessing. they give those animals a chance to live and find good homes. Yes, sometimes they do have to put them down but in most cases it is to save another animals life.

Annika I am so sorry. I understand how you feel, we had a pregnant cat abandoned in neighborhood during the summer of 2008, she lived in our yard & played with our puppy that whole fall & had her babies under my front bushes. We cared for she & her babies as best we could but I am severely allergic to cats so she could not live in the house & are garage soon became too cold & we had to take her & her beautiful babies to the shelter. It was a terribly hard thing to do. I will be praying for you & your feline friends.

Sorry Girls, I don't want to sound mean. I only said this because I work at a animal shelter and I see first hand how they try and find these animals good homes and how hard it is for them to put an animal down. I'm praying that all the animals you have taken into a shelter have found good homes.

Thank you all for the kind words *hugs* We are set to take the two kitties to the shelter Saturday. I've come to terms with it and though I'm going to be sad, these two are better off there.

It is hard to care for an animal and then have to make the decision if you can keep on doing it. I think it is awful that people abandon them. Shelters are caring and try to place the animals, but with the economy, there is an abundance. I belong to a Animal Rescue Group that started up last year due to the amount of animals that were being abandoned and euthanized. We have a Humane Society here, but they get filled. We take dogs, cats and pet rabbits that are at the end of the line and put them in foster homes for rehabilitation and then place them. We are totally run on donations. Look to see if there is a rescue group in your area that is a no-kill, I think you can Google search for them or go to www.petfinder.com to search rescues in your area. i wish there were more caring people in this world like you then animals wouldn't be abandoned like they are. i also think that vets should be more willing to work with people in this economy so that there are less animals left behind-if you love animals- like most vets should-then help people keep their animals at a reasonable cost

I am so sorry you have to go through this tough time tomorrow. It is difficult to know what to do with abandoned animals, we had our share of them, too. Be proud of how much you have been able to do and try not to feel so badly about the ones you can't keep. You are a very good-hearted woman.

I am so sorry to hear about your tough decision. I wish we were a little closer, and we would take them for you. Our barn has become the local shelter, and we just do what we can. We love them all, and joke that we raise cattle, sheep, horses and cats. Please know we're thinking of you, and sending prayers your way today~

Thank you so much my dear farm sisters for the love and support. We are gearing up to get our VW bug out of a snow bank and into town =) The kitties will be much better off not cramped on my mud porch. I will have my laundry room back and all should be peaceful =)
Truly, thank you all so much I really needed some "Umph" to get me to the point of actually doing this.

Hugs to you Annika! Earlier this year I had to give up my rescued rottweiler. I think some of you may remember that one. I still think about him and miss him very much.
Karen~ I don't know how long it has been since you took your kitty into the shelter, but maybe just maybe if you call them they be able to tell you if they were able to place her in a home and the area. I couldn't take it after giving up Danny. I guess it was a few weeks maybe a month and I couldn't stand not knowing what became of him. So I called. The gal was very nice. She knew I was heartbroke over giving him up. She was honest in telling me that he was too energetic for the shelter so they transferred him to a rottweiler rescue. That lady was able to place him in a loving home about a week later.
Sending you lots of hugs and prayers Annika and all Farm Girls who have had to let go of a loved pet.

Melanie, we took my Chloe to the shelter in the spring of this year. I don't know how long they keep them, and in this case I'd rather not know. KWIM?
I have thought endlessly of calling, but in the end I'm of the opinion that I'd rather not know then to call and find out the ending was not a good one. My pets are far more to me than a pet, and I know it'd stay with me for the rest of my life on earth if I knew they had to put her down. So I am putting my trust in them.
DH said that they were very sympathetic and kind people when he took her in, and that the woman didn't think it odd that she was accompanied by my letter.
I'd even thought of having DH call to inquire, but then if he didn't tell me what he made out - again, I'd know it was bad as he wouldn't have the heart to tell me.
<sigh> Darn things are like our own children........ |

Yeah I understand, Karen. Was it a no-kill facility? The shelter I took Danny to was a no-kill and that was the only reason why I took him there. They had him listed on a pet finder website and then his pic was gone. It was way too fast to find him a home. Then I started hearing gossip about this no-kill shelter putting animals down. You talk about one upset person! I think that gossip was all gum-flapping. I was able to verify their story of Danny being transferred to another rescue facility.
Had I found out differently it would have torn me up. I was already in awful enough shape from giving him up. That shelter wouldn't have liked me either.
