Anyone watch the National Dog Show today? The Irish setter won best in show. I love watching the dogs show off.

oh I wish I had Cindy. I was so busy today running around and doing things that I didn't get much of a chance to watch tv.
Irish setters are beautiful dogs. :)

Wasn't the Irish Setter's coat gorgeous? What would I do for luxurious hair like that!? It just shimmered and flowed each time the dog moved and the dog stood so beautifully. I don't know much about judging dog shows, but who could argue with that dog winning?

As beautiful as those dogs are, I'm afraid I see it as a "beauty contest". Many breeds have been so bred for appearance only, that they have developed serious problems; seizures, hip displasia, short life span. Mutts can be every bit as loveable and working dogs hold a special place in my heart; SIL does hunting trials with his Vizulas, friends race and race sled dogs and herding dogs hold a special fascination for me.

I had my fingers crossed for the Russian Wolf Hound - darn it. My heart belongs to my Great Pry's but I have always wanted a Russian Wolf Hound - maybe when I move to the deep woods of Alaska to keep those bears at bay.

Its nice to see something other than a poodle win!

We don't have cable, so i'll see if it's on the computer

I'm preferential to the herding breeds :)

My dogs have all been mutts (the very best breed,in my opinion). But I LOVE watching that show! I never see the whole thing, but I catch bits and pieces of it.

I am a Dane gal, & they NEVER win anything; I think because even the best Dane can't compete in the movement category with most other breeds.
I love watching the dog shows, although I, too feel that mutts are just grand.
I appreciate learning about each breed, & although purebred dogs at times get a bad rap, there are many many reputable breeders devoted to breeding responsibly.
I adore (besides Danes) Salukis, Clumber Spaniels, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs,& Corgis(little dog with big dog personality)

Lisa, thanks for the kind words about reputable breeders. We've gotten a horribly bad rap in the last few years, thanks to groups like PETA, who have an agenda to wipe out "breeds" as we know them. I breed and show English Bulldogs, one of the breeds targeted for extinction because of their extreme looks. Every reputable breeder I know is doing health and genetic testing to assure our dogs are healthy. Those folks who are in the showing/breeding game for the $$ are quickly put out of business if their dogs aren't healthy.
A dog show can be considered a beauty contest, but it's more accurately a showcase of breeding stock and how well it adheres to a written breed standard. The judge asesses how well each dog matches the standard, and does not compare the different breeds. That's how an Irish Setter can beat a Saluki or Corgi. He was the best example of his individual standard on that day. Those dogs face each other every weekend, somewhere in the country, and that particular day the Irish won. The next weekend it might be that gorgeous Boxer, Scarlett. She's been winning big-time, all over the country.
Anyway, I digress. I love the sport of dog showing and can't wait for the spring shows. And the Danes DO win, just not that often on the televised shows. There are some gorgeous Danes on the show circuit.

The morning breeze has secrets to tell you. Do not go back to sleep.
