........because I normally pride myself on how well I can 'read' animals. That was before we moved here to the country and had an encounter (or was it?) with a calf:
At my ripe old age of 48, I'm proud to say that I have yet come across an animal that I was afraid of. Yet here I was with my daughter (19 yrs. old) out for our morning three mile walk about two months ago. Our entire route takes us by exactly 4 houses (three with barns), and a lone 'farm' of Holsteins minus a house - the rest is fields/farmland. There are two pastures on this cow farm; one for the calves and the other for the older 'crowd'
At that time most of the calves were still in that cute stage and a few a wee bit bigger. Although we approached the electric wire fence a few times to take a gander at the cuties on our jaunt - we generally were too hot to do anything other than watch as we walked by.
One morning though, we stopped to look at them when one of the larger calves decided to run (charge?) at us towards the fence. We could actually feel it's hooves beating the ground as it ran/charged us. So here we were, frozen in our sweaty tennis shoes and our hearts chugging in our throats, scared out of our minds and wondering what this stinker was going to do. Our only options? Run (at my age?), climb a telephone pole, or dive into the cornfield behind us and hope that if it came through the fence that it wouldn't follow us.
So we stood frozen while it ran up to the fence and came to a halting stop. After several minutes of staring the critter down and taking deep breaths to still our thumping hearts - we finally turned and started walking again and prayed it wouldn't try anything more. It mooed at us when we were quite far from it. Was it a 'Hey, where ya going - I just wanted to come see ya!' moo or was it a 'There, that'll teach ya to stop and talk to my buddies!' moo.
The funny part? We had to walk by this little bugger on our way back. Did we dawdle? No way! We walked and didn't say nary a word with our eyes staring straight ahead.
And I'm ever so embarrassed to say that I really do not know to this day if it was just trying to play or really trying to charge or call our bluff. Would it have come through the fence? COULD it? After all.....it's just a measly wire! Who knows?
Sadly, that was our last time we walked.........DARN CALF!

| I think I would have been nervous too. We had a neighbor who's calf got out & ran through our yard at us but there wasn't a fence between us so I jumped on top of my car. It's not a great feeling when an animal that much bigger runs at you. You never know what's going on in their mind or what they are going to do. I would have taken off too & not gone back that way again. |

| Guess that's one way to up that heart rate! ~giggle~ Glad you and your daughter are ok and that the calf stopped. It is scary when they charge you like that. It was probably only playing but... |

Living with those creatures MYSELF for the past several years now, I'd have just thrown a rock at him and bounced it off his forhead. That would have probably stopped him pretty darn fast! And if it didn't? Well, I would have hot-footed it outta there pretty quick myself! (LOL!)
