Q injured his right rear fetlock. No idea how. Vet came out, and he was good for her. Wrapped it, gave him bute, kept him under observation. Okay, standard happy healing. (Thank goodness, I will omit all the panic attacks I had between discovering him limping and the moment the vet said said "hmm, that's odd, but he will be fine."
Today my husband started cutting the wrap off Q's leg. Q was not pleased, and moved off. DH had forgotten 1) to halter and tie Q and 2) to let Q inspect his tools before doing anything(Q is insanely curious but accepts new things once they have been inspected). Of course, being curious, he rounded back to see what "Dad" was holding. Following protocol, DH let Q sniff the scissors. Q made a face...and then balanced himself carefully on 3 legs and lifted the bandaged leg up all on his own...with no prompting or even a touch... so that DH could resume with the bandage removal.
Where was I with a camera? What a goofy horse. Thank goodness for it. Have to say, there is something to wonder at every day on a farm.

Too late Megan, he has done that. Hope your mare came home okay. Last winter we found the gate swinging, but both horses waiting to be fed. A line of tracks in the fresh snow showed that they had taken quite a walk through the fields before coming back. I guess it's good they like home/being fed. :)

I love your story. He's not a goofy horse, he's brilliant! He's taught you how he expects to be treated, with calmness and respect for his "need to know" attitude. The part about him lifting his foot to cooperate was too much! My husband always says horses are unpredictable and not too smart. He needs to meet one like yours!
