Any of you farmgirls make up your own cat and dog foods? Would you share the recipes??

good morning, i think there is an older post from last late winter or spring. teresa, one bad mama wolf who used to be here did. was it grace also? there are others. i figure its simply real food. just as folks bodies make it all work same with our dogs. we have beef and chicken. so i use my trim. i add fresh ground whole wheat to it. also eggs always garlic fresh cut up. i use milk or old chicken stock out of the freezer. i cook my meat. if i have veggies needing used they go in. a balanced plate so to speak. its all small or ground. i freeze this in ind. servings. i also make power balls for our pigs. they love them in summer frozen. i also add fiber to the dog food and DE to all animal food here. hope it helps get you started. i bet some one on here has a recipe or a site to go too. this is just my thoughts. happy days sherrye

Kathryn, thank you SO much for posting this question! Our dog has been getting on in years, and I want her to have the most nutritious food we can provide. We have always given her scraps (she's nuts about gnoshing on the bone from a leg of lamb), but lately I have really been concentrating on giving her more homemade food than store bought. I had taken her to a do-it-yoursef grooming shop a while ago and the lady there started to educate me about all the really awful stuff they put in dog food. I couldn't believe it - and when I did research, I was absolutely horrified! It really drove home everything she said. So, we've been slowly moving from storebought to homemade.
Sherrye - I think that is such sound thinking and a great "recipe." I know we have to be careful about what kinds of food we give them, so I really, really appreciate your input - I wasn't sure where to begin other than with some scraps of meat and some mashed vegetables. My son, especially, is going to be thrilled! You have really motivated me now! Thank you! As soon as the remainder of storebought stuff we have here is gone, we're going to instead make her food ourselves from now on!
I'll really be looking forward to seeing what the other farmgirls share, too! This is just so important... Nini

Kathryn, I have been feeding my dogs real almost raw meat for quite awhile now. I go the the slaughterhouse at least once a week and get a few boxes of bones that have alot of meat still on them. I cut as much meat off as possible and cook it just about medium then put portions in freezer bags. I pull a few bags out every few days and that's their breakfast. I mix a little garlic powder in or some leftover scraps for variety. Also I keep all the smaller bones for their evening snack. They love them.
I have a Yellow lab that will be 4 in Dec. He has always been on the skinny side. Since he's been getting real meat he has really fattened up. Also have 2 13 year old Rat Terriers. They are still going strong. I am so glad I found a good place to get the meat. I am really surprised how much meat I actually get off these bones. And they would just throw it away. If I didn't care about the meat I eat, there would be enough for us to eat. but there's no way because I don't know where this came from. Or really what they were fed. And I am picky and only eat my own grass fed meat.
If you give your dogs bones, please do not cook them. They should ONLY be raw bones because they will not splinter. Also they are so good for their teeth if they just get soft food. This has really helped my old dogs. I was surprised that they could chew bones at all but raw are softer. And they just get smaller bones like ribs. And this is beef bones.

Are you sure about the garlic? I would check with your vet. I heard that garlic was poisonous or not good for dogs? I could be wrong but please check first. There are some things we eat that are not good for our pets.

Sandra, I think you are thinking about onoins. That is not good for dogs. I don't know why. But garlic is a good flea deterrent in cats and dogs. I have been putting the garlic powder on the meat they are eating for about 6 months now and they are still with us. They have nasty breath is all.
