Okay, so I haven't been on this site in probably over a year and I feel really bad about that. Life has been complicated for a while but anyway...I'm back and I have some questions.
I have had lifelong stomach issues and it was recently determined that I'm allergic to meat. All meat...doesn't matter what kind. Yet I can eat cheese and eggs without a problem. As a result, I am now vegetarian...AND the holidays are approaching.
I belong to big, meat-eating families. They probably use broth and stock in everything so I'm afraid that I won't be able to enjoy anything.
My question (which took a while to get to) - can anyone recommend a good vegetarian/vegan dish that carnivores might actually enjoy? I want to be able to eat something during the festivities besides the bread (and the copious amounts of chocolate for dessert.)
Thanks!

I've been veggie since I was 13 years old and frankly eat EVERYTHING at holidays except the turkey or ham or whatever. It's usually the most boring part of the meal anyway ;). At thanksgiving I usually have veggies, sweet potaties, regular potatoes, bread, pie...mmm. Carbolicious for sure, but it's only one meal a year right?
I cook for vegetarian food for carnivores ALL the time. And they always love it. There tons of non-meat things to eat once you wrap your head around it. How about a pumpkin bisque soup? Or acorn squash stuffed with a wild rice filling. Or a killer cheese manicotti (stuff some tofu in there - I promise they'll neve rknow and you'll get lots of protein). Giant fabulous salads - I'm talking GOOD salad with fresh nuts, amazing homemade dressings, yummy goat cheese or parmesean and some fruit. I eat tons of soups, either vegetarian or vegan, and can give you some ideas if you want. I guess it depends what kind of dish you want to bring? |

I have been vegetarian for over 30 years and vegan for 10 and I agree with Maggie. Tons of stuff out there to make. Plus people may enjoy the variety. My Husband is italian so we can always bring a pasta dish to Thanksgiving and no one thinks anything of it. Plus I do non-traditional holidays sometimes, like soups and sandwiches with lots of variety. Even meat eaters get tired of the same old things and some just want to eat lighter and not feel weighed down all day. I often make a vegan stuffing with chestnuts, veg, nuts, and cranberries, stuff it in a squash, and that alone can be a full meal. Just bring what you want to eat, and I will bet you don't have left overs to take home. I found out half of our meat eating relatives don't even really like turkey and just eat it because it's there.
