Guilty! I am afraid I did not decorate at all this year except for one bowl filled with some very retro ornaments I found at a rummage sale just after thanksgiving. Also there are some things up along the dividing wall between bedroom and dining room that include a couple collectable northwoods Santas and a set of blocks that spells out Merry Christmas along with an artificial evergreen swag that has been up since last year!!! I have a good excuse I think. Two surgeries to replace both my knees in this past 18 months. I really feel bad about the santas because they are so dusty. I can no longer climb a ladder to get at them and it is low on the priority list of things for hubby. I may just have to hire a teenager to assist me with the high stuff.

I didn't put any decorations up this year either. I intended to (the box of decorations is still sitting under my desk  ). I got so busy trying to make gifts and get everything ready to go to in-laws for Christmas, I guess I just didn't get around to it.
I'm thinking of having the kids help me do some "Winter" decorating, so they can have the fun of putting lights up, etc.
But then I have to take them down again eventually . We'll see!

Darla, I do have lights up along the beams in my ceiling all year long and in winter when I get blue from all the grey days I turn them on. Instant fun. Also in my kitchen along the tops of the cabinets I have blue ones. I love lights so always have them up somewhere.

I had to laugh at this question. We are usually the last to take down our live tree but this year we had to take it down on New Year's Day because it was becoming bald!This has never happened before! We have friends who celebrate the orthodox calendar for Christmas and New Year's so we have always kept our stuff up until after their visits .
When my son was younger his friends all thought this was very cool because they thought that the gift giving lasted longer at our house!
I used to decorate the whole house and loved it but due to health limitations in recent years I sort of weeded out the stuff I didn't truly love and now concentrate on the main areas of our house. I must say that it makes things much easier to manage. One time our lighted house village stayed up for 3 years, so I know dusty! We now have it in a glass front old china cabinet that my husband fixed so the village can stay put and we just change the trees and greenery, add and subtract snow. At Christmas I open the doors , hang some wreaths from pretty ribbons on the doors. It used to take up 6 big storage containers in our attic and weighed a ton!

Over the years I too have streamlined the decorating... I still have fake garland and lights up outside on our decks and they are lit up at night. It looks so pretty with the snow on the ground. We live in an open and unpopulated area so the lights bring warmth to me during the bleak nights...can get pretty lonely. My 12 yr old made a large clay Hannuka dreidel in Art class at school that I love that I will keep out all year. My Christmas tree became a fire hazard a week before Christmas so it got tossed the day after into the field. It just seems that less is more for the Holidays now that I am older.

LBG-- You are in the running! I can see my neighbors tree lit this very minute in her front window as we are having our first "real" snow
this winter( a whopping 2-4")! It looks like Christmas Eve again, I love it! (Don't feel bad, my outside garlands , lights and wreaths are still up, I just couldn't take them down until it really looked like Christmas w/ snow!)

| Oh my goodness, I did not want to imply I felt bad I LOVE Christmas with all the trimmings (I really just wanted to know if I won the prize). I just hate that empty feeling I get when I have to put all of my lovely ornaments away. But I already am planning for when I will see them again next year. I usually take my tree outside to the back patio for the birds to enjoy in the cold weather so I get double duty out of it.lbg |

I still have a garland up between my dining room and my bedroom as well as two north woods santas and some blocks that spell out Merry Christmas that have been up at least two christmases. One of my friends came in one day and remarked how much fun it was to come to my house because it did not matter which direction she looked it was some holiday! I have angels up all the time, helium holiday balloons for whatever reason stay until they hit the floor, hand painted easter eggs are always in view inside my hutch as well as my crystal goblets(the three remaining ones)have curly irridescent ribbon on their stems and are ready at a moments notice to celebrate whatever we are celebrating. So you get the picture. I love the holidays too and am loath to take the sparkle down.

I read about this great idea for a seasonal tree centerpiece in a book called "mrs sharps victorian traditions" (something like that). You make a little "tree" out of chicken wire and grape vine, put it in the center of your dining room table or wherever, and decorate it each month with a different theme.
I haven't actually done this yet but it sounds like such a fun idea! I love having decorations up and having any excuse to put up lights or decorations of any kind. It just adds a little warmth and brightness to a home.

| I too have a small collection (ok, maybe not that small) of seasonal decorations for my home. So when Christmas comes down, which will be this weekend, (Ms. Bramble you will need to check your neighbors window)I will bring out my collection of hearts. Fabric, stone, marble metal, you get the picture. The perfect Valentine Red candles, and valentine dishes. And just when I am sad about putting them away, the Luck of the Irish will hit my table! So, I do not have a tree but I am awfully handy with chicken wire-hmmm maybe I will have to add that to the collection. |

Ladies you are so inspiring...Love the idea of a chicken wire tree! All different kinds of hearts and red candles! I put my pink table cloth on the dining room table and fill little dishes with those heart candies that have the sayings on them...they taste kind of funky but I have always loved the little messages since childhood...for St. Patty's its big here cause DH is half Irish...green table cloth and corned beef and cabbage and soda bread for supper and a little plant of clover for the table.

My husband's birthday is Jan. 16 so we have to leave up the tree 'til then (don't ask me why!) Luckily we now have an artificial tree! Took down all the decorations the 17th, but the boxes are still waiting to be stored away. Took down the outside porch lights when we hit 70 last week (broke a record for Jan.). So, I guess my home is ready for Valentine's Day, though I don't really decorate for that. Streamlining has gotten to be quite a science with me through the years!

I think I may win......my tree is still up from LAST Christmas! lol!
Explaination....we finished our basement into a rec room with a full kitchen, bar, family room, etc. So we put our tree up thinking we would spend a lot of time in the basement. Norm did such a fatastic job, it's beautiful. River rock fireplace and matching river rock on the bar...alas, we hardly ever spend time down there unless we have company. But when I plug the tree in it's so pretty, like a big nightlite!

You know, if you put only red lights on (esp. outside) you can keep them up until Valentine's Day...and if you use only green, you can wait until March 17!

| Well, I'm new to the forum here, so hello!! I wanted to say about the Christmas decorations, I do have mine down EXCEPT for some grapevine wreaths I made and put on all my fenceposts, nothing fancy, just the wreath, but they looked so cute I decided to leave them up all year! |
