Hello dear farmgirl sisters!

We’ve just posted a video for making Half-Cup Pemmican from MaryJane’s Ideabook on the maryjanesfarm.tv website. Check out the video to see how easy it is to make.

I’m going to be making many more of these as snack bars and for hectic morning breakfasts, but I’m also thinking of making one like a cake for a nuttier fruitcake/Stollen for the holidays – what do you think?

Of course this means we’ve been munching on Pemmican bars for the past few days here at the farm and, trust me, they are delicious -- plus they’re 100% organic and vegetarian! Have any of you tried them yet?

Hi Hallie! They look delicious!! I had to watch the video without sound because I don't have it here at my job.
It looked as though there was quite a few nuts in the mix, can they be substituted for something else? I love them but am not supposed to eat them!

Yes, Ann, the recipe is in the Ideabook and at least half the ingredients are nuts! Maybe you could try substituting more dried fruit or upping the flour mixture to make a more bread-like snackbar? Let me know what you come up with and thanks for watching!

Ann- What about Pine nuts? They are more like sunflower seeds on the allergen scale

Maybe some wheat germ? I don't know...extra fruit too! I'm not supposed to have nuts either, but I eat them anyway =P I'm going to make some as the recipe states, but I'm also going to play around with it. Looks like a lot of fun!

I am not actually allergic to the nuts, I have diverticulitis, "they" say not to eat nuts and seeds (so the pine nuts wouldn't work either but thanks for the suggestion) I have to admit, I DO eat nuts in limited amounts anyway, I can't go the holiday without my pecan and chocolate pecan pie!! But if I can, I will leave them out or substitute. Wheat Germ sounds like a nice addition, as well as more fruit, could end up like fruitcake! LOL!
Thank you all for your kind suggestions!

Ouch! I had to google what Diverticulitis is. I am sorry you suffer from it. Good luck finding good alternatives. Maybe some crunchy granola clusters or something?

Ann, yes I think granola or other whole grains would be good. Best of luck with your recipe alterations! Let me know how it turns out.
