HELLO ALL!
my husband and I recently finished "building" our new barn!! now the real work is to begin, I could use some ideas of how to organize my feed/ tack room. if any of you have pictures of yours and are willing to share I would love to see them! Or even of just how you have decorated the inside and outside of your barns.
A barn is a very special place and I would love to see how you keep and show yours off!

Hi Corie. Welcome to the forum. I LOVE LOVE LOVE barns! I would live in a barn. I wish I had a barn. I do have a small barn that has 3 sections for my goats and chickens. It's really old. So I wish I could help you. Can you show us pictures of your new barn? I'd love to see it. And I am so happy for you. I guess you have horses. Do you have other animals also?

I am with Kristin I love barns and at different points in the year I do live in the barn - kidding and lambing season for sure... Barn are as personal as those who use them. I just got done rearranging my girl goat barn for winter and the coming kidding season. Each year I change things a bit by the needs and also what works and doesn't. As I get older too I make changes that will make it less work at the hardest times of snow storms, kidding issues and such. Maybe if you give us some idea of what the barn will be used for we might be able to make suggestions.
Somewhere in all my books I think I have one about barn layouts, do's and don't, tack storage and such... I will give a look around and see if I still have it...
I can't wait to hear what others have to say.. I am a barn lover, liver and continual cleaner..

I too am a lover of Barns, and that is why id like to make ours as much a pleasure to be in as possible! When I said it was done, I was wrong as I don't believe that it will ever be done! We used Behlen Country panels to build the barn as we got a smokin deal on it on Craig's List. Though it is really nice I don't think that it was designed for weather in places that actually have seasons other than hot! So now we have to figure out how to winterize it. so this winter I think we will have Tyvec covering all the open spaces. LOL!!!
We found these great stall mats that allow all the urine and any other liquid (example: spilled water) to drain through! they are great! I have had my two Clydesdales in two of the stalls for the past couple of days and not one pee spot to clean up, lots and lots and lots of poop, but no pee spots! They are called Stall Savers and they are really reasonably priced!
You asked what I am going to be using the barn for, and a better question would be, "What are you not using the barn for?". I will have horses in it, I will have a couple ewes and a couple nannies in it for lambing and kidding. this late spring early summer I plan to raise some fryers in one or two of the stalls, and hay and straw storage this winter. So it has to really be a multi purpose space. I have 5 stalls and one tack/ feed area. But this winter two stalls are going to be dedicated to hay. Right now it is all in disarray as I have not organized it as of yet. at some point we are going to properly seal everything up, but with weather moving in (it is currently snowing) and the lack of funding we will have to do some "get us through winter" fixes. I will post some photos as soon as i get a few extra minutes.
Thanks girls for your replys! It is difficult around here to find other girls that enjoy the life that we do so much!!

One improtant fact is to make sure no one can get into your feed, or hay areas. You don't need them to get sick, or make a big mess! I would use it for a while, then decide what is going to work best for you. I have changed things in my barn several times. Have fun Michele |

Oct. 24 2009 we found out we were going to get a mini Pinto named Bella. He started building this barn and we all worked every weekend day and into the dark of every night to get Bella here. She arrived 5 days before Christmas 2009.
This is the first day Bella arrived, we had a temp fence up and straw all over her stall. She just ended up peeing on the straw, we don't do that anymore!
This is our barn. My husband is very proud of this building. It is solid. I had no idea it was going to be this finished. We just finished painting the fence and barn/trim 2 weekends ago.
Tack room entrance, chicken top plate holder for her goodies, boot for me!
We left the front of her stall open so the kids can help even more. We planned it so we could see her when she was in there with out opening up the doors. It turned out great b/c the kids can feed her on their own with out being in with her. She is a digger, she paws at the ground as she eats. We need those stall mats mentioned above. If you look closely at the place she is standing she has about a 3 inch deep area where she's dug out her plate. We are always taking little stones out of her eating area.
Things left to do: Add electical. 1 plug, light in each stall, light in the tack room, light for the open air area. Buy metal cans for the feed. We keep chicken, bunny and horse food in there. Make a food holder for Bella's hay with something to keep the grains off the floor. Hang the buck up under the window.
Things we'd have done different: Built it in the spring or fall. Measured for the tack room window from the outside not the inside!

My barn is small, a 24 x 30 pole building, which houses my horse and all his "stuff". It used to house my duck til he died last spring. I have one large stall (roughly 12x15) with rubber matting over a stone floor. Mine had metal walls, so I had to put up an inner wall of wood, as horses can kick thru metal and really get hurt. My nephew got me some free 2x6's from where he works. The walls block the wind really good but watch out for rain storms - whew is it loud! I can stack 120 bales of hay (on pallets) plus have room for straw storage, grain in garbage cans, and some open space. I don't have a tack room, I have a wooden storage thing that holds hoof dressings and brushes and stuff.
The only thing is, in the winter I have to brace the west side door as it blows open in a stiff winter wind, and then at least once a winter the sliding door on the east side will ice shut on me, and I have to crawl in thru the upper part of the stall door. LOL! A friend said he wanted a video of it...haha . I do wish it was bigger, but heck I'm lucky I got what I do! Good luck with yours!
Some of my best friends are horses and dogs.
