For months on my calendar has been this little blurb: "Jon Katz at Joseph Beth", the day before my birthday. I have been looking forward to this date since May and the event did not let me down!

Does anyone know of his work? My first introduction was The Dogs of Bedlam Farm which challenged the way I think of animals, working dogs or just "dogs" in our house, farm life, city life, human companionship and the heartbreak that often comes with these relationships. And I've never turned back. This book tour is promoting a work of fiction called "Rose in a Storm" based on his female Border Collie, Rose, a true working dog on his farm in upstate NY.

If your are a dog lover--if you have a farm with livestock, or even just a barn cat, and he is coming to a bookstore, bookclub or library near you (he's finding small venues in all kinds of small towns this tour), do yourself a favor--treat yourself and go. Even if you've never read one of his memoirs, you can learn so much about the relationships and expectations we have with and of our animals. Sharing the spotlight on this tour is his hospice therapy dog, also a Border Collie, called Izzy. He visited folks briefly last night but nestled down for a sleep behind Mr. Katz at the podium where he appeared to be dreaming of sheep--those legs were really going!

I'll post a link to his blog--it's an incredible peek into his life at the farm with his wife, her quilts and textile arts, the dogs of the farm who become old friends rather quickly through his descriptions and tales of them. He is also a HUGE supporter of the family farm and promotes awareness to the loss of these farms through a series of photographs documenting farm families and their properties. He sells them at the book tour and proceeds go to the local farm bureaus in the counties upstate NY that support these local farmers.

Jonni, I'm SO glad that you enjoyed your evening! I have heard his name , but not read his works, and now I will! I love all dogs and anything that we can do to help the family farms is a great thing. Thank you so much for the recommendation =)

It was really wonderful, Annika. I've always admired him and was so excited to learn he would be in our area for a discussion. I recommend all of his works, and I really recommend the blog for some insight into this thoughts--of particular interest is a series of photographs he has taken of Izzy inside the hospice program where they work in upstate NY. Very moving. Very.
