I bought one last night to try to clear out my insanely congested sinuses. The first side I tried cleared out so well I was briefly in heaven but the other side just ran down my throat.
This morning I tried again and both sides would only go down my throat which gave me no relief at all.
Any idea what's going on? Am I too clogged for it to work?

i Have been using one for a couple of years now. I have a lot of trouble with allergies and it really helps. I find if my sinuses are too swollen it doesn't work. I have to take a sinus pill that will take down the inflamation first and then it will work well. Once I can get it to flow freely, if I do it every day it seems to keep the inflamation down. Be sure to use neti pot salt that has no additives. Try tilting your head to the side a little farther - that may help as well. The water should not go down your throat - you may be tilting your head too far back. Blessings, Sheri

I used one and did not like it. I got strangled when it ran down my throat. I coughed and coughed and then the next day i got a cold. I don't know if that is what caused me to develope a cold or not. I have not used it since.

Dorinda the water should run freely from the opposite nostril and not down your throat. I lean over the sink with my head tilted to the side and pour the water into the upper nostril and the water runs freely out of the one on the lower side. Then just switch the position by turning your head in the opposite direction. Pour the water in very slowly - don't flood it. I hope that helps.

Sheri, I didn't even consider my sinuses being too swollen. Makes perfect sense! I'll take a nice steamy shower tonight and try again as soon as I get out. Hopefully that will help.
I seriously thought about calling Roto-Rooter this morning to see if they could help my poor snout!

You also have to open your mouth while you lean forward, tilt your chin down, then tilt your head, then insert and pour your neti pot.

Merry is right, I lean WAY forward in the sink. If you finb one side drains & not the other, do not give up. Keep doing it once or twice a day. It will finally loosen up. & yes, keep your mouth open. Good Luck I love my neti pot |

It really has helped this summer, it cleans out the dust and pollen, and helps with post nasal drip. But it does have a small learning process, as each person is different.

I use a slightly different version of a neti pot called neil-med. Same idea, but just seemed easier to use to me. Works great - I don't have nearly the sinus issues that I used to. And yes, if my sinuses are swollen, I don't use it.

There are actually videos on youtube for how to use a neti pot. Just google. It definitely has a learning curve, and I hate using them but it is good when I'm feeling a sinus infection coming on! |

Just started using one and am having problem with just one side. But then again, my nose has been broken twice and I think the septum is off to one side. I feel much better after using it. I'm so tired of feeling clogged up.

I love my neti pot! It's not actually a pot, but more of a bottle that you "squirt" and it puts a little pressure behind the water, which is so helpful when a sinus infection starts. I find that if I use it when symptoms are getting bad, I typically don't need to go to the doctor. Does anyone make their own salt for the neti pot? I know, I could google it, but I'd rather hear from people who have actually done it :) Thanks, and happy sinus cleansing!

My whole family loves neti pots! It did take a bit of practice to use correctly, but anytime we feel a cold coming on we take it out, and 9 times out of 10 it seems to clear us up. |

I also use the Neil-Med bottle and found it was much easier to use then the pot design. Its a bottle that you squeeze so you have more control in my opinion. The one thing I found was that I needed to breath out the other side and it seems to help the rinse go out instead of down my throat. Although, if I'm majorly congested sometimes it takes multiple rinses to get it cleared out and the first ones end up in my mouth. Sorry that sounds so gross. When I'm that clogged up I tend to do this in the shower too so the heat/humidity will help. I just bend forward. I've been told you can use any salt as long as it doesn't have iodine in it.
