 Hi everyone! Wow what fun to find a group of wonderful women who love the simpler life. Currently, I live near Houston. DH and I bought our dream property in Groesbeck two months ago and J&L Ranch was born. Our plans include world class Santa Gertrudis Cattle, German Shorthair Pointers, our rabbits (current breeds Mini Rex, Californian, and American Sables) and a Quail Preserve for hunting. We look to make a permanent move in about 5-7 years. I think the idea we look forward to the most is our vision of building the operation to be energy wise...solar powered. I invite you to visit our website and watch us grow. I'm currently working on the site and should have the new rabbit site up within the month and start the new GSP (dogs) and Cattle site.
Background - DH is fifth generation Texan, grew up on the family farm in East Texas. Me a "yankee" transplanted to the state I call home, two degrees in agriculture economics, suburban girl always country at heart. Two children both in college, one son and daughter. I love to crochet, cook and take care of my roses after I spend time with the animals.

Welcome Kim!! Your place sounds great!! How fun to have such a vision. It sounds perfect!!
Tell us about Santa Gertrudis cattle. I am going to look them up when I get done here. I have researched dairy cattle more, since I got my first milk cow, Mona (a Jersey) in October. I love the way cows think! We have neighbors on two sides with GErman Shorthair pointers. They seem like such smart dogs..and are sure pretty! The Santa Gertrudis is officially the first American Breed of Beef Cattle developed by the King Ranch. The make up of the breed is 5/8 Shorthorn and 3/8 Brahman. Designed specifically for hotter climits they do well in the south. They have also shown to do well in colder climits. The history of the King Ranch is even a part of Texas history studied by children in school. You can read up on the history of this wonderful breed at:

The breed itself is known for ease of calving, excellent milking traits and high weaning weights. They are also noted for being a really easy breed to work with. Case in point, our bull six weeks after purchase comes up for scratches just like the girls who have been shown. He has never had a halter on. Currently we have five Santa Gertrudis and one Brahman. We will eventually go to 70 until we can purchase additional land. Santa Gertrudis are known for being hustlers in the pasture and the majority of bloodlines do well wintering. By far the Santa Gertrudis has the best Youth Program in the country through their fantastic support of Youth through generous breeders donating a heifer to each of the Class Winners at the Santa Gertrudis Youth Nationals and the amount of money in available scholarships and premiums at the major stock shows. Of course the stronghold for the breed is in Texas and southern states. The funny thing to me about the breed is how they are so greatly disliked by most cattlemen. And I have no idea why. All the research I've done and experience I've had in commerical cattle show the "Gert" to be a very good breed.
There is one drawback I have found with most purebred breeds when I was looking for our show heifers for the kids. Websites are at best poor to none. Even our cattle page is not good at this point. Once the new site is done you will see some professional shots of the cattle.

Thank you, Fawn! I just love the Santa Gertrudis deep cherry red against the green grass. And to Jenny, I too love to watch the cows and learn from them. The way they think can somewhat be frustrating at times. When I first started with cattle I was amazed to find cows would lay a newborn down and be clear accross the pasture. A mare would never consider doing such a thing. With an over abundance of coyotes at the ranch this really becomes frustrating. The first two weeks of a calf's life is the most dangerous when it comes to the coyote.
I look forward to you seeing our place, I'll take some pics this weekend. Lots of mesquite....anyone want some wood for the bar-b-que. Come cut all you want. Bull dozer just purchased to clear, yet leave enough cover for the future quail.

My sister-in-law just bought a lake place up there at Lake Limestone, near your farm place, so familiar with where you are talking about, Groesbeck is the closest place for us to get supplies when up there. Keep in touch. Later have a great day. Angel

Hello Kim and welcome! I am new here as well but have not yet been able to move to my little dream farm. I am counting the days though!! I think it is wonderful that you are well on your way and I wish you the best! I had never heard of the breed of cows you have and since it sounds like they are beef cows, that could be why. I am looking for dairy. I love rabbits though and had Jersey Woolies for a while and loved them. I was hoping to learn to spin their wool but a family disaster ended that short and I do not know if I will try again but I would love to have on as a pet again!
I enjoyed reading about the breed of cattle you have and will enjoy seeing your website as your dreams materialize and grow!
