I was just given 2 five gallon buckets of crab apples and have no idea what to do with them. I have had jelly made with them in the past but have no idea how to make it, although I have made jelly of all kinds in the past. Can anyone help me on what to do them?
I didn't know my uncle had so many and his daughters don't like to mess with them, so there is more where these came from if I can figure out what to do with them. |

You could make jelly or apple sauce. Do you have a food mill that will take out the seeds & skins? If you do just wash them-stem them-cook them & run through the food mill to remove seeds & skins.

Do you think a juicer would work, I don't know what ever happened to my food mill. I have used it before with pears and it worked great. Because the crab apples are so small I wasn't sure if it would work. (May try it anyway, what do I have to loose.) I think they are too small to make apple sauce or apple butter out of, (not much flesh there).
Thanks for your help. Tina |

Tina, Make jelly just like you would with regular apples. The crab apples have a lot of their own pectin. I make jelly and wine with the crabapples here. The apple sauce idea sounds good, I'd want to put it through an electric ricer that removes skin and seeds with such small fruit. Have fun and enjoy! Heather

I'm so glad you asked about this! I have a crab apple tree, but have never done anything with them. I may try jelly this weekend!

Heather the wine sounds good. We make our own wine. Do you have a good recipe you would like to share? |

You can also make the cinnamonized crabapples that is used like a condiment. They are delicious that way.

You can pickle some. I make juice out of them, and use in place of boughten pectin. Also juice to drink is good too. Check out a ball canning book. Michele |

I make crab apple butter. I almost double the spices and add sugar till it tastes sweet enough for me.
