Hello, my name is Heather. I live in the city limits of Salem, Oregon on a 1/4 acre we affectionately call the "Highland Homestead". I am so thrilled to have found this website with a wealth of information. I hope to be a helpful and encouraging farm girl sister with my posts and even connect with some local and not-so-local farm gals.

I am married; we just celebrated 12 years last month. Joe and I have 3 kids. Ivan & Lucy (twins) are 5 almost 6 and Warren is 4 1/2. We are gardeners with an emphasis on growing our own fruits and veges, plus canning & other preserving methods. I am a bee guardian (aka beekeeper) with 1 very productive hive in the back yard. I am a certified traditional rug hooking teacher. I learned from the very best rug hooking artists IMHO-my grandmother, mother, and aunt ;) In addition, I am a craftaholic; learning random skills as necessity dictates in order to complete projects around the house, give meaningful gifts, repurpose items, stretch a dollar, or generally, beautify and embellishing my world and those around me.

I am especially committed to teaching and exposing my kids to lost or dying arts, traditions, and ways of life. Just to know that they will grow up with an active example in their life of eating home grown food, seeing their father fix his briefcase handle rather than buying a new one, one day telling a friend my mom made all our soap, recognizing homemade bread as normal, opting to turn off the tv for the family joke of "how can we make this into a birdhouse or bird feeder" challenge...you get the idea. Even if they graduate high school not knowing exactly how to make their own bread or soap, that they will not be intimidated by it and seek out how and where to learn. That they challenge the modern assumption of always just buying soap and bread at the grocery store.

Well, enough of my soapbox. I look forward to interacting on the message boards and learning a lot from you ladies. Heather

Hello Heather. Welcome to Farmgirl Connection.

I live in Houston. We are trying to live a simple life on the outskirts of such a big city. I love to crochet and do needlework. My daughter is five. She can't wait to learn to knit or crochet.
My hubby and I have been married 13 years.

Glad you joined us.

Hello Heather. Welcome to the forum. I love that you are a teacher of all these neat things. I just learned how to make a rag rug. Well, bowl really. It's wanting to become a bowl. So I am having to take some out and start over. And I just made a dishcloth. Never had before. It is SO easy. SO I know a girl who lives up the road that is going to start an art school next month. Teach all sorts of old timey crafts and useful things. I am so excited to be a part of this.

Heather,
A big HELLO and WELCOME from Washington state!! You sound like a very busy lady, but when you are doing something you love and believe in it's not really 'work', or should I say 'not stressful'. You will be amazed at the number of kind and loving Sisters you will meet here.
