I have been asked by a friend to use the fabrics in the picture for a set of 4 placemats. I have done this style before and loved them this one is just not working any sugestions? I have plenty of all the fabrics.

Diana, forgive me for butting in (not being a seamstress) but I can envision blue fabric diamonds in the corners of the red rectangle. Just a thought :)

The patterned fabric "jumps" a little too much.
Would your friend mind another color? One idea I would do is change the outer border to black. I like Sharon's idea about the blue diamonds in the corners of the red, too.
Just an idea, Diana :) I can't sew, so my comments are merely what pops to me :)

Diana, I am a quilter and rearrange things so many times before it suits me. After looking at this, I would either take out the flower print between the red and blue and use a solid black or orange instead. You could also try it this way - take out the last flowered border and replace it with a solid black or orange (the orange color would need to be matched pretty close, I think, to make it work). I think that there is too much "print business" going on. Love the bright colors though. Just a suggestion.

Diana, I would think a small black border with each patterned print so there are 3 rings of black and three rings of pattern and maybe a black center. I have seen a similar table cloth done with cream and solid colors and it was neat lookin.

I agree it is to busy. You need to add areas where your eyes can rest. A solid black would be good. Orange would be ok but I think maybe still to loud. The diamonds in the corners sound great. I think that would pull it together and make the red and blue not look so disjointed.
