A vinegar soak? Or would that be too harsh on the vintage fabrics? Or maybe you could just buy one of those color catching cloths to launder it with in case something does bleed?

When you say sampler, I am assuming you mean embroidery sampler? If so, there is a product called Treasure Wash by Cottage Mills Inc (looking at the bottle now) They are out of Lake Forest IL. I've used it on my embroidered items, especially the over-dyes which have a tendency to bleed BADLY. It does suggest, however, that you use a teeny bit to check colorfastness. However, if you have a good cross stitch shop near you, take it to them, please! Sometimes they offer a service where you can have the item cleaned.
City-bound for now! Looking for my little piece of heaven...
