I don't have a root cellar but am wondering if I can store root veggies in my unheated garage over the winter. I know there is a way with either sand or straw? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Michele
oOPS I hit the wrong button so ignore my last post. As I said we store the root veggies in a cold room in our shop the biggest thing is trying to keep the temperature even. In your garage can you set up an area and using the styrofoam blue insulation make a box around it. I know styrofoam is bad but for this process it would work to keep the temperature even around your veggies. I also use sand to store my carrots and potatoes and it has worked very well over the years. In the spring when I do have leftover potatoes they will sprout eyes to replant naturally. Be sure they don't freeze in there. Just check on them and maybe include a thermometer to look at as the temperature drops. If they get close to freezin get a space heater to knock off the chill a little.

We tried that with potatoes in our house in Colorado. Just in a heavy cardboard box with a blanket on top. Didn't work, they froze when the temps reached below zero outside. Maybe the insulated cooler would work better? And definitely keep an eye on them, we didn't and it was too late by the time we checked on them. I've been toying around with trying the "buried trash can" method when we get some land again. Good luck! Let us know how it works out for you.
