So, as I'm sure many of you know, eating beets will make your pee turn purple. I know this is a strange topic... but I was wondering if some varieties are more potent than others? We planted and ate Detroit Dark Reds and, boy! are they potent! We hardly ate any... usually we have to eat lots and lots of them before our pee will turn color.
My hubby was also wondering, if it does that to your natural functions, what does that do to your insides? are your insides dyed purple after ingesting beets? strange thought...
I also thought it was interesting that this variety of beets, after boiling them to be pickled, the juice turned blood red rather than that beautiful purple-red that most beet juice turns... I assume that's how they get their name.

I was told by a doctor once that if you eat beets you have to wait a week or more to have any kind of internal scoping done. It does stain the stomache, intestines, colon, and bladder!
There are a few heirloom varieties that are not red in color and don't 'bleed' or stain. I am goin to be growin a few of them next year. You can find them from Seed Savers Exchange!

Elizabeth, It's not just in urine but also in stool that the red pigments of beets show up. Don't worry if you have to have an emergency appendectomy after you've had a lot of beet salad, your insides won't be dyed purple. Your cells don't take up the red beet pigment, that's why it's passed out of your body in your wastes. Beets are a fantastic liver and gall bladder cleanser cleanser and are being studied as a treatment for some types of cancer. http://hubpages.com/hub/Health_Benefits_of_Red_Beets Linda
