Greetings from Kansas! I've got farmgirl in my soul, but unfortunately life has planted me in suburban Kansas City for the time being.
I spent just about every weekend of my childhood on a farm in southern Missouri where we raised cattle and had five fat ponies. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a barrell racer when I grew up. Lord only knows how I wound up a social worker?!!! (although, I have taken many inner city youth horseback riding, camping and fishing and it has had wonderful therapeutic value!)
My husband is an Iowa farmboy, and gratefully shares my dream of one day returning to farmlife. Growing up in the country had such a profound effect on who we have become as adults that we hope to give similar experiences to our children.
For now, I have carved out my little piece of farmgirl heaven here in suburbia (it can be done!). I love to garden, knit and sew, camp and fish, and just sit on the front porch and reminisce.
Anyway, so glad I found you all and I am looking forward to learning about you and from you!

Greetings from Virginia back at ya! Welcome to you from another newbie. I love the picture your five fat ponies painted in my mind. Visuals like that really bring wonderful ideas to mind! (I love to write, can't draw, so paint pictures with words!) My dad was an Iowa farm boy and had a big garden. Nothin' like home grown! Imagine that a barrell racer....hold tight to your dreams and your reigns!

Glad to have you join us. I love to garden and sew too. I can only knit straight up and down, for now, but would like to learn how to make other things besides scarves!!!

Hey Mary from Kansas!!! I too live in suburbia in FL, but grew up on a Kansas wheat/soybean farm! We also had two horses, some chickens, a couple of ducks and a turkey (along with various cats and dogs). Sounds like we have a lot in common! We currently are renting an home on an acre lot, and though I don't have a garden, I feel like I have a bit of the "wide open spaces" I grew up with happening here. (I do have a few veggies planted in pots, but nothing major.) I did barrel and keyhole racing with my horses just for fun, never really competed on a high level, but loved it all the same. I just hope one day my kids can have a horse to ride and a few chickens to feed too!

Welcome to the home of the Farmgirls. Where in southern MO did you go each summer? Just curious, I'm from SE Missouri. However, we still have more than that in common, we have a daughter who lives in Manhattan, KS, just a little west of you. We'll have to connect when we go to visit her so maybe we can visit, too.
I currently live in the suburbs of St. Louis, but my kids would swear we live on a farm. No animals, but a garden. We've turned the family room into a barn with farm decor & built-in horse stalls. I sew and am always making/crafting something and I like to cook. Truth be told, they love it, too, because the boys are always talking about going to the farm and how they wouldn't mind living there, but their wives/girlfriends will not think of it. So hopefully, our love for the farm and moving there someday will help to bring them around and see the beauty of country living. In the meantime, like you, we will be bringing the country to the city. We'll have to swap ideas.
I've rattled more about myself than I intended, but if you check with the other farmgirls around here, they will vouche for my long-winded fingers. Sorry about that. I'm glad you are here and look forward to knowing you even better.

Hi Lynda! My husband is a KSU grad and loves Manhattan (I think he'd like to move there one day in fact).
We spent every weekend in Archie, MO. a teeny tiny town if you could even call it that, but a wonderful "Dairy Dine" right off the highway with the best soft serve vanilla cones you can imagine.
Anyway, thanks for sharing about your country life!

I am like you, so far I can only knit straight rows but I have set the task for myself that I will learn how to make something other than scarves and shawls by the end of the summer. I bought a great book with very good illustrations so I am feeling confident that I can do this! After all, it's just some yarn and two pointy sticks, right?! Have a great day! |

Hi Nancy! "Merryday" was actually the name of our first horse, and we called her "Merry" for short. Of course I always thought it was "Mary" and she was named after me
