I have never entered anything like this before, but I'm doin it. I'm enterin the canning class and baking contest! I have 2 divisions in each class I want to enter. I am doin the jelly and pickle divisions and the quick bread and cookie divisions. The theme this year for the bakin contest is apples in any form, so I'm usin my crab apple butter to flavor with. I already have my rose jelly ready, just need to polish up the jar and make my label. I have one jar of my special pickles done, but I think I can do better. I will have enough to make a few more jars by fair time, so I'll pick the best one of the lot when the time comes. I am gonna start tomorrow makin batches of my bread and cookies and see which recipe works best. It will be judged on appearance, crumb, texture, moistness, and flavor. I'm a little nervous since I've only been bakin for a few weeks, but it seems like so much fun. I am gonna try to ignore the nerves and step outside my comfort zone. It is just a bakin contest. It doesn't affect my life. I want this to be as fun as it should be. Plus, I will have a whole freezer full of quick breads for munchin later. It will help out on the stockin up for cookouts!

Good for you Angela!!!
That is something I have always wanted to do (every year) but it has not happened yet for one reason or another. It sounds like you have some yummy things to enter. Good luck!

You Go Girl!! Yes, it is supposed to be a fun venture front to back, top to bottom. It is a lot of work to prepare for if you enter several items, but it is FUN work. My farmgirlfriend, Anita, enters several food and garden items (I love her 'garden basket'); she always comes away with top awards. In the past, I entered my chickens and photography. My Pekin rooster (bantam Cochin) won 'best of show' years back. Last year I entered 21 photos. Like you, I was a little nervous about putting 'my goods' out there for scrutiny. Silly really, but I do know just how you feel :o) Anyway, I ended up coming home with 10 purple ribbons, 9 blues, 1 red and the coveted 'Judges Choice'...which is sorta like best of show...only it is the judge's favorite whatever overall. I was shocked in the most delightful way and learned a lot from the professional photographer/judge who critiqued everyone's work in a very positive way. Best wishes for your success, I bet you'll do great. Let us know and post PHOTOS if you can...? Shery J

Angela, Good going! Have fun. Its great that some of your stuff is almost ready, canned and just needs labels. Our daughters did a lot of 4-H projects and it got pretty hectic when too much was left for the last few days. Shery and Robin can do it and so can you, and the rest of us who have considered it. I help out in the open class area of our county fair and its fascinating. Some stuff is so incredibly well done and other stuff, well....... This week I got a reserve champion with my turned wood lamp, just had to borrow it back from DD and dust it off. I'd really like to try the foods and canning next year. Good luck! Susan

good for you, they are so fun! I started entering when my kids were in 4-H. I haven't ever done as well as my girls have. Three times already they've walked away with Best of Show in adult division for baking!!!
My two youngest girls are both young adults now, college students. But we're all planning on entering again this year.
I'm glad to hear that you are too, you're gonna be hooked girl! I can tell!

I DID IT!!!! I just got home from droppin off my entries. I decided to enter rose jelly and my deluxe relish. I couldn't get my pickles to look quite right, so I went with relish. It turned out so pretty and I liked the colors. I used dark green peppers, yellow cucumbers, and white onions in sweet relish liquid. It was pretty. I really impressed the lady in charge of the canning class with my jelly! She had never heard of it and we got to talkin. She wants me to bring in a jar of my canned zucchini bread next year. She said she would make up a new division just for it if I bring it next year! I am so thrilled with the whole experience as it is, and I haven't even made it to the judgin part! I get to go back at 7:30 tonight to see if I won anything. I am so nervous and so excited I can't wait! The lady called a few of the other class supervisors over to look at my jelly! I'm sure that's a good sign.

Thank you! I am so proud! It's my first batch ever! It tastes great too! I made my 84 y/o grandma giggle when I told her! It was so worth it.

My kids entered the 4H fair competitions this year, for the first time, and they all got blues! I'm so proud of them! Three of their entries got picked to go on to state fair. I used to enter 4H projects at the fair every year, I'm going to try the open classes too next year! So many memories, and it'll be fun! Congrats Angela!

momdrinkstea, my kids and me entered the 4-H division for years. Now that their 4-H careers as members are finished, we enter the open divisions.
I love, LOVE the whole County Fair Attitude! I might volunteer some of my time over there.

We've been to 5 county fairs so far this year, 4 in NY and 1 in PA. The kids love them! And it's a great cheap date! (Have you SEEN the price of movie tickets lately?!) Plus, you get lots of exercise walking around - just avoid the food stands! LOL I love seeing all the exhibits, they give me great ideas. I judged some of the 4H exhibits this year at our fair - it was fun! Love seeing the kids involved! The fairs always need great volunteers! :)

Angela, Congratulations! Getting a blue ribbon is soooo much fun! YOu know you do a good job but its fun to have others agree and to have friends and family see it there for display! I loved the years when my kids were heavily into 4-H and open class exhibits. It was more fun than when I was a 4-Her myself a lot of years ago. Since I retired 3 years ago I've helped out with open class entries at our local county fair. It's a blast! I work as needlework superintendent and it gives me a wonderful chance to meet the people when they bring in their entries, I love seeing who is doing what! And then helping the judge is a great way to learn about so many different ways to make my own work better. I've only taken woodturning to exhibit myself but have hopes for more next year. Susan

Yay, Angela! I bet it is good. I'm glad you entered and won. Our fair is in Sept. I love to go see all the exhibits. It's my favorite part besides the animals.
