i was wondering if any one on now knows if i need water in my slow roaster oven to render the fat. we picked up our beef. i am sorting bones dog meat trim and fat. i want to try a soap with the rendered fat. thanks ahead girls happy days sherrye

If you are doing it in a slow roaster I would not think so. I don't usuall y even if I do it on the stove-you just have to do it low & slow.

thanks for the reply carla. do you do this often?i am boiling the scraps for dog broth and food. pretty exciting to use more of the animal. i put the good fat in my crock pot to render. i still have about 75 lbs of stuff yet. its not all thawed yet so will do it tomorrow. happy days at the learn as i go farm sherrye

I have done it several times before-it is just time consuming! I like the soap though!!

I always have added some water...you can just get it off easily afterwards...it separates from the fat. I hate how it makes my house smell but beef fat makes the best soap for sure.

well i meant to say we sure got skunked on calves you with mona and me with ida and her heifer neither pregnant. all other cows in pasture took. i am wondering if they are not right inside. there were 5 babies out of the same bull and pasture. these 2 related cows did not take. dang. hows your new buddy for mona doing? happy days sherrye

They are getting along great. He follows Mona around like a shadow and she just loves him...licks him and plays like him like he is a calf. He is really freindly with people too...a nice plus for such a little guy. My kids adore him. We named him Stewie.
