The daycare that we have been using for Nora had an "incident" yesterday at that same time Doug picked Nora up. Nora was playing in the one area you can't see from the door and the childcare provider went back to get Nora for Doug.

Doug heard one of the kids being sassy and then a *slap* then right after that a louder *slap*. Then a kid crying "Ow my face! My Face! I want my mommy!!" When the childcare provider came back with Nora, Doug asked what had happened. The gal said "Oh that other girl slapped me so I slapped her back."

WHAT?! Doug was furious but played it cool. He got Nora (not the slapping victim) out of there and we are NOT taking her back! My sister is going to take her for this week so I can get it set up for her to go to her preschool. *sigh*

What a mess and so disappointing. I really like the owner (who was not there at the time) but I can't, just can't take a risk that someone would abuse my child.

How scarey. I'd would have pulled her out immediately too. I would also write a letter or talk to the owner and let her know why I was pulling her out because of what happened. That kind of behavior is opening the owner up to huge liability.

Do what you love, love what you do.

oh gosh Alee! Glad Doug played his cool... and kudos for you both to stand for Nora. .. I would also send a letter to the state in regards to that daycare!

I would let the owner know first - she/he may not be aware that this behavior is going on, the fact that the owner wasn't there when this happened could point to that. I don't blame you a bit for pulling Nora out though - would have done the same thing.

The owner tried to say that the worker hadn't slapped the girl- just touched her face and told her "we don't slap people" but that is definitely not the case. Doug clearly heard two sharp slaps. So we won't be taking Nora back and DFS has been notified.

I would have called the police and stayed til they got there, so to tell them exactly what I heard and what was said to me, then I would have taken my child out, and found another school for her. If it had been my child slapped, it would have taken an act of God to stop me from beating that women within an inch of her life, this makes me soooooooooo very angry, how dare she slap a child...

Alee, that is so sad. I'm so glad you won't take her back there again. I had to leave my kids once at a lady's daycare in her home. That lasted 2 days. I quit my job. I said I would never take my kids to a daycare. And I never had to. You just never know what goes on there. And the kids have no voice. I'm glad your sister is there to take her.

Happiness is simple.

Thanks ladies! At this point we have to step back and divorce ourself from the situation. Nora says she has never been hit/spanked etc there so we are confident that Nora never suffered. I am so thankful for that. First thing tomorrow morning I need to call the Preschool that we have talked to about taking Nora and see if they will accept a mid-cycle addition. I am not sure that they will. If they can't then we need to find interim childcare until August.

The thing that is really scary is that Nora has allergies that can cause mood/rage issues. She is doing great and hasn't had one for a long time. But what if she had had one when that lady was there?! And if she is willing to slap a child, what else is she willing to do?

It sounds to me as though this lady needs a good talking to and maybe removal from the care of these children. There is never a reason to slap a child, though some are really too young to reason with. You can always remove a child from a situation though.

I am sorry that this had to happen to you, Alee. Day care is such a precious thing these days.

Oh my gosh!!! I sure hope that gal never works with children again!! I do full time daycare in my home and I do know that it is very hard to find someone you can trust to watch your precious children. That is why I originally, many years ago started doing daycare in the first place..couldn't bear to leave my own boys in daycare. I have done daycare off and on ever since. iMy youngest kids are teenagers now and I feel like I still am needed as a daycare provider in our area. I wish you were closer,I would love to care for little Nora.
I hope it all works out well. YOu guys sure did the right thing..no second chances in that case!!

That just kills me...slap a child back to teach them not to slap. It reminds me of my friend who's son was hitting another child. She went over to him and started hitting him and saying "you don't hit". I have never hit my children and they have grown into wonderful and caring adults.

I agree! I wish I could have Aunt Jenny watch Nora too!

We never discipline in anger. I think it's the worst thing you can do. Sometimes Nora has to go sit in time out while mommy cools off but slapping is so aggressive! I know there are lots of parenting styles and that's good because not every child fits with one method- but I don't think slapping should be any part of any parenting style.

I have heard the child who go hit is a bit of a spitfire- but that doesn't excuse the daycare worker's behavior. Slapping in anger only taught that child that if she pushes the right buttons you can make adults lose their temper. Can you imagine what she is going to do with that "lesson" as a teenager?

NO ONE should touch your child in a discipline way. that job was given to you and doug. so glad you are on top of things. i must say that to protect other kids i would have turned her in. had some one come talk with the day care folks. its wonderful that you have family close to help with nora. i know what a fine parent you are just by your many loving posts. heres hoping you find a wonderful place for her to go. happy days sherrye

Well the Preschool we had toured is AWESOME and willing to let her come in mid cycle instead of having us wait for the next session... Thank GOD! We paid the down payment today and will pay the rest when we bring her on Monday. I have gotten early out time at work for the first week so now we are just scrambling to get everything else lined up!

That is awful Alee! My kids came out of daycare for a similar reason. Except it was the owner and what I saw picking my kids up was verbal abuse. I had heard allegations of physical abuse. My kids and my nieces and nephews were always complaining about her and her son. And when I walked in on it, I knew then what they were telling me was right and it wasn't just kids not wanting to go to daycare. I picked them up that day and they never went back.

It's nice that your sister can help you out. And I'm sure Nora will love hanging out with her aunt for a week.

Yes- It is awesome to be so close to my family and know I can rely on them in a crisis. My heart aches because I truly did love the care and flexibility of where we were taking her. I am just so disappointed that it went downhill so fast.

I also am really missing Nora :( This is going to be a long week.
