Are there certain books that you reach for when times are tough? We have had a very tight month and I have found myself reaching for books that are set either during the depression or during pioneer times, for a sort of inspiration and reality check both. I find my lot doesn't seem nearly as dire when I read some of the things my forebears went through. I just read a book of stories that my grandma wrote about the years when she and my grandpa were first married - they married in 1932 - and those were hard times. I have also started re-reading the Roger Lea McBride series about Laura, Almanzo and Rose Wilder. It is inspiring me to stay busy and productive in the face of uncertainty. I would love to hear any of your stories of books that comfort and inspire.

I always return to the Mitford Series by Jan Karon. I find the simple people and everyday stories very sweet. And any of the "Amish" books by Beverly Lewis. I find myself craving their lifestyle in the midst of this crazy world we live in.

I notice I do the same too. I finished reading "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. On & off I am reading "The Worst Hard Time" by Timonthy Egan.

I just read The Worst Hard Time recently. Wow!

I tend to reach for a book called 'By His Stripes'. It's very fascinating.

The Worst Hard Time is such a good book, you just have no idea what the depression really meant. That might go on my list for the summer...And I love the Mitford series too - that is exactly what I'm doing, looking for simplicity in crazy times

Amy (Farm Friend), Great question! When times are tough, I reach for books and movies that make me feel cozy and safe; that is, I escape. I reread the Mitford or Anne of Green Gables series or Verlyn Klinkenborg's essays in The Rural Life, or I watch movies such as A Room With A View (romantic comedies of errors set in the early part of the century or Europe). Try The Zookeeper's wife by Diane Ackerman. I posted about it on this forum a couple of months back. One of those triumph of the human spirit novels but completrly void of sappiness. Also a few years back I read & Loved Life of Pi by Jan Martel. Both novels are animal-centric, though I did cry at some passages.
