Okay so I've decided to go camping for the first time since I was a Girl Scout. I even bought a 6 person tent for me, the kids and the dog can try our hand at 'roughing it'. The kids and I are going to set up the tent in our dreadful backyard tomorrow (it's a big marshy slope), while I BBQ. I figure if we can camp there then we can camp anywhere. I'll be making our campsite reservations on Tuesday and we'll be going camping at the end of July. So sisters, do you have any suggestions for games we can play or anything else I might need to know for camping with two kids and a dog?

Congrats! How exciting! How old are your kids?
We've been camping since my girls were infants. They're 12 & 9 now. We only take games for when the weather is going to be dicey. We take nets for catching critters, bug jars, magnifying glasses, fishing rods & tackle. My youngest asked for a 5 gallon bucket & a aerator for Christmas last year.  To keep her bluegill alive while she fishes. It's been great fun!
If I have time to plan ahead I'll take plaster of paris in a baggie - we can make casts of animal tracks. Paper & crayons to make rubbings. Some twine or yarn to tie sticks together. My girls will collect nature items and make dolls & fairy houses. That keeps them busy for DAYS! They change up the rules. Sometimes it's nature items only - sometimes it's whatever they find in the camp (what litter bugs have left behind, they clean up camp at the same time!)
A bird book & bug book are a must for us. We take them hiking. Bring along binoculars if you have them. That tires my dog out so I can relax at the campsite. Being 8 you'd think the puppy in him would wear down, he's an excited camper!
Enjoy your trip and be sure to share how your trip was! It's also a great idea to set your tent up in the yard before hand. Get a feel for how it goes up.

That's awesome. Well for games think back to your Girl Scout days, all those nature/tracking games for when you go on a hike.

Girl, its going to be hot at the end of July! I hope you are heading for the mountains. We camp a lot, but always leave the pets at home. I know a girl who brought a cat, and she got out of the tent. Im sure your dog is better behaved than any of mine though, and two of mine are giant monsters. The other one just doesnt listen. :) I would suggest that its the little pleasures that make camping trips fun, make sure you have all the food you would want, fresh fruit and such. Dont forget your own coffee or tea. cozy jammies, make sure your bedding is comfy. Grab some cards, and a camera. Im sure you will have a great time!

Yeah I know Sarah but as MaryJane said 'weather is weather' so we'll just deal with it. That's when the kids picked to do our last major summer outing, so that's what we're gonna do. My 17 yr old daughter and her friend, my 5 yr old son and I all camped in the backyard on the 4th of July. It was GREAT!! The tent took about 30 minutes to set up once we figured out which poles were which (we've put different colored pieces of duct tape on them and labeled our set up diagram to cut down set up at our campsite). I've decided to board my dauchshund...she didn't like being in the tent and kept moving around all night. We grilled and the kids pretended to forage for food in my garden. We were close enough to downtown Lawerenceville that we could see the fireworks without having to leave then we made s'mores. Thanks for the suggestions!

One thing my kids enjoyed when we went tent camping was to make a menu--one easily prepared by Mom or them or a combination. We liked spaghetti, chili, pancakes, bacon & eggs, etc. The young'uns can easily be a part of it too.
The only thing about the weather is that one needs to be prepared if it shows chance of rain. I've camped twice in rain--both on the Oregon Coast. The first time I awoke about 1 a.m. and the fog had rolled in and the dew was so heavy that the trees were dripping. The second time I made the biggest mistake and that was to put a tarp under the tent to keep the dirt off the tent. Water rolled under the tarp and everything got wet! Cut our trip a day short.

The tarp I have is exactly the size of the tent so should I buy a longer one just in case?

My son is so excited about camping he asked if we could sleep in the tent again tonight! I bought some tent fans which should help with the heat some and made reservations yesterday! WeeeHoo!

We just got back from our first camping trip of the year (In the middle of a HEATWAVE) -it was still a blast.
I recommend some kind of wet wipe, just to get the grime off your hands/face when it's time to cook - instant refreshment.
My family enjoys coloring books and card/board games (even my teens). And we'd never go without our Pie Iron - absolute must!
Enjoy!! We 're all ready to go again.

| we went camping all the time when I was a kid, I miss it so much, your kids will love it and will have such great memories. One of my favorite memories is of my dad, who is gone, sitting around a campfire in Montana telling us stories, his cowboy hat on, smoking his pipe. I miss him too. have fun ! |

Thanks Staci I've got a couple packages of wet wipes in my plastic chuckbox and some in everyones camping gear too. I have some travel games (yahtzee, slides and ladders, uno and several other cards games. I've been packing like we're going to be gone for weeks! We haven't even gone and my kids are already asking if we can go after the leaves change color.

Some sort of bug repellent!! We went camping for the first time this year a couple of weeks ago, although my husband has been camping on fishing trips all winter. Well, by the end of last summer I had our VW camper all stocked, turns out that DH was "un-stocking" it all winter so he would have more room for fishing stuff. We dealt with the lack of utensils and cups okay, but just about were eaten alive the first night. We always take a cribbage board and cards too:)
